Two Arrested Over Hathras Stampede As Investigation Widens

Two more individuals were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday in connection with the tragic stampede in Hathras, which resulted in 121 fatalities on July 2. The arrested individuals, Durgesh Kumar Saxena and Dalbeer Singh, were volunteers at the religious gathering. Both played significant roles in organising and managing the event. They were presented in court on Monday. So far, 11 people, including chief volunteer Dev Prakash Madhukar, have been detained.

An audio clip has surfaced featuring a conversation between a volunteer of self-styled godman Bhole Baba and his friend. In the clip, the friend mentions the high death toll, to which the volunteer responds that such incidents were inevitable. "Baba had said that those who do not worship him would face such consequences," he stated. The volunteer added that fearing and worshipping Baba could save lives.

Audio Clip Raises Questions

The audio clip, lasting approximately 4.39 minutes, has gone viral. In it, the volunteer's friend claims that 300 people died. The volunteer replies that Baba had predicted deaths for those meant to die and safety for others. "There is no need to panic; we have seen more bodies in Rajasthan," he added. The police are currently investigating this audio to identify the voices involved.

The Uttar Pradesh government reported that most of the 121 victims from the stampede during the 'satsang' in Sikandra Rao have been identified. The event attracted devotees from various districts within Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. Efforts continue to identify the remaining bodies.

Stampede Details Emerge

The tragedy occurred as devotees rushed to catch a glimpse of Bhole Baba at the end of the event. This led to a chaotic situation resulting in numerous casualties. Authorities are working diligently to provide clarity and support to affected families.

In an official statement following the incident, Bhole Baba urged followers to maintain faith and assured them that wrongdoers would not go unpunished. This message aimed to reassure devotees amidst growing concerns over safety at such large gatherings.

The investigation into this devastating incident continues as authorities seek answers and accountability for what transpired during this religious congregation.
