Goyal explained that the hefty donation requirement was designed to sift through candidates, seeking out those who viewed the role as a unique chance to accelerate their career without being deterred by initial financial sacrifices.

"This wasn't just another hiring post. As some people pointed out, the 'you have to pay us 20 lacs' was merely a filter, to find people who had the power to appreciate the opportunity of a fast track career, without getting bogged down by the constraints in front of them," Goyal elaborated. He further clarified that anyone fixated on the payment aspect to Zomato would be automatically disqualified from the selection process.

The initial announcement by Goyal that the chosen Chief of Staff would work without pay for a year while contributing a substantial amount to the company's social initiative led to an uproar on social media platforms like X. Critics argued that such conditions favored wealthy applicants, potentially excluding talented individuals without the means to meet the financial requirement. This move, some suggested, set a concerning precedent for employment practices, likening it to an unpaid internship that disproportionately benefits candidates from affluent backgrounds.

In response to the backlash, Goyal provided more insights into the applicants' demographics. He categorized them based on their financial capacity: those who could easily afford the donation, those who could partially afford it, those who claimed they couldn't afford it, and those genuinely unable to make such a payment. Despite the controversy, Goyal noted that many applications were thoughtfully prepared, indicating a deep interest in the opportunity beyond the financial implications. He announced the closing of the application process by 6 pm on the same day, promising further updates on the selection process.

Goyal's search for a Chief of Staff has been ongoing for nearly two years, highlighting the importance he places on finding the right candidate for this pivotal role. Despite the criticism, he remains committed to a selection process that he believes will identify a candidate with the right blend of humility, ambition, and willingness to invest in a significant opportunity at Zomato. As the process unfolds, Goyal maintains that the chosen candidate will receive a competitive salary exceeding ₹50 LPA from the second year, contingent upon a successful first year of collaboration.
