Triple Talaq: Muslim woman writes to PM Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath

The Supreme Court has said that a five-judge Constitution Bench will look into the legality of triple talaq during the court's summer vacation in May.

Delhi-based Arif Ali was married to Alka alias Parveen of Chuchela Kalaan village, Amroha district, on 8 June 2014. He divorced Alka on 9 December 2016. He has mentioned 'talaq deta hoon' thrice in the letter.

Also, Arif Ali has claimed that he divorced her wife in the presence of two witnesses. He has also sent the demand draft of Rs 58000 to fulfill the obligation of Mehr - amount of cash to be given to the woman for maintenance .

The triple talaq is a Sharia law practice that allows men to end a marriage simply by saying 'talaq' to their wives three times in succession.

Earlier, Atiya Sabri and Shagufta Shah from Saharanpur, UP, have raised their voice against Triple talaq and wrote to PM Narendra Modi for help.

Shagufta Shah wrote to a letter to PM Modi requesting the abolition of Triple Talaq saying 'I voted for him, I hope I now get justice.'

The Modi government has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court supporting ban on Triple Talaq. The government took a stance that the practice violates the fundamental rights of Muslim women and leads to their exploitation.

Taking cognizance of number of petitions filed in the apex court, the Supreme Court has said that a five-judge Constitution Bench will look into the legality of triple talaq during the court's summer vacation in May. The bench begins the hearing on May 11.
