Tributes to Shyam Benegal: Celebrating the Legacy of a Master Storyteller in Indian Cinema

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday, leaving a significant void in Indian cinema. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their sorrow, noting that his work will continue to inspire future generations. Benegal was celebrated as a master storyteller who redefined cinema and nurtured many actors. His contributions were recognised with awards like the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan.

President Murmu highlighted Benegal's role in starting a new wave of cinema, crafting numerous classics, and grooming many artists. "My condolences to the members of his family and his countless admirers," she posted on X. Prime Minister Modi also shared his grief, stating that Benegal's storytelling had a profound impact on Indian cinema. "Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," he posted on X.

Impact on Cinema and Society

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge praised Benegal's contributions to cinema, marked by thought-provoking storytelling and a commitment to social issues. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described him as a visionary filmmaker who brought India's stories to life with depth and sensitivity. "Heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and admirers worldwide," Gandhi said.

Benegal was instrumental in the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s, creating classics like "Ankur," "Mandi," and "Manthan." Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur noted that Benegal changed the direction of Indian cinema with films like these, creating stars out of great actors such as Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil.

Tributes from Film Industry

Actor Manoj Bajpayee expressed heartbreak over Benegal's passing, calling him a visionary who redefined storytelling. "It was an absolute honor to have had the opportunity to work with him," Bajpayee said. Akshay Kumar also mourned the loss, describing Benegal as one of the finest filmmakers in India.

Kajol shared her thoughts on Instagram, stating that Benegal's contributions to Indian cinema are immeasurable. Producer Karan Johar thanked him for stories that shaped incredible talent and created pride in Indian cinema. Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra praised Benegal for capturing the poetry of ordinary lives.

A Legacy Remembered

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi paid tribute, acknowledging Benegal as one of India's finest filmmakers and intellectuals. He noted that Benegal discovered and nurtured some of India's brightest film talents. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Odisha's former chief minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed their condolences.

Nitish Kumar mentioned that Benegal's demise has left a void in art and filmmaking. "I pray that the almighty gives his family the strength to withstand this tragic moment," he said. Patnaik described Benegal as a doyen of Indian cinema, while Sandip Ray called his death a personal loss for the Ray family.

Personal Connections

Sandip Ray recalled how Benegal made a documentary on his father, Satyajit Ray, whom he affectionately called Manikda. He shared memories of their warm relationship, which deepened after Benegal made "Ankur" in 1974. Sandip expressed shock at the news of Benegal's passing.

Benegal died at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital after battling chronic kidney disease for several years. His daughter Pia Benegal confirmed that he passed away at 6:38 pm in the ICU. He is survived by his daughter and wife Nira Benegal.

Just nine days before his death, actors who worked with him gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday, marking it as a final farewell to the filmmaker who gave them some of their best roles. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed surprise at learning about how Benegal crowdfunded "Manthan" in 1976.
