Firms Accused of Exploiting Tribal Land in Jharkhand's Santal Pargana
Senior CPIM leader Brinda Karat has accused domestic and foreign companies of exploiting tribal land in Jharkhand's Santal Pargana region. She claimed these companies, with the help of local brokers, are violating the Santal Pargana Tenancy Act, which aims to protect tribal land.

Karat made these allegations while speaking at a convention in Dumka. She stated that the Narendra Modi administration had auctioned coal blocks to both government and private sectors. According to her, the terror instilled by brokers prevented tribals near the Pachuada coal block from voicing their concerns.
Violation of Tribal Rights
Karat highlighted that Gram Sabhas were being ignored in this process. She alleged that Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) outsourced coal mining to several companies that disregarded labourers' interests and private landowners' rights. She also mentioned that ECL acquired farmers' land but failed to provide promised compensation, rehabilitation, and jobs.
The former parliamentarian pointed out that hundreds of such cases remain unresolved. She expressed concerns about the environmental impact, stating that the underground water level could decrease if the exploitation continued.
Environmental Concerns
Karat also criticised the Namami Gange project, claiming that despite spending crores of rupees, the river Ganges near Sahebganj town had turned into a nullah. She expressed fears about the long-term environmental consequences of ongoing exploitation.
In conclusion, Karat's allegations highlight serious concerns about the exploitation of tribal lands and environmental degradation in Jharkhand's Santal Pargana region. Her statements call for immediate attention to safeguard tribal rights and address environmental issues.
