TRF and the Rise of ‘Faceless Killers’ in Kashmir Valley: Why Tracking Them Is Tough, but Not Impossible!
The battle against terrorism in Kashmir Valley has taken a more covert form, with groups like The Resistance Front (TRF) becoming a major threat. With tighter surveillance along the India-Pakistan border, traditional routes for smuggling weapons and infiltrating terrorists have been made harder for Pakistan-based terror groups. In response, these groups have shifted their strategy inward-attempting to ignite terror from within Kashmir itself.
The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistan's Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), is a relatively new and stealthy outfit operating with dangerous precision and intent. Positioned as Pakistan's latest proxy, TRF is engineered to execute attacks under the false pretense of a "homegrown movement."
But India isn't buying the act.

TRF's 'Soft Killings': A Silent Strategy of Hybrid Militancy
Unlike older terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e-Mohammed that carried out headline-grabbing attacks, TRF thrives in the shadows. Its strategy revolves around 'soft killings'-targeted assassinations of Kashmiri Pandits, migrant workers, police personnel, and anyone seen as cooperating with Indian authorities.
These murders are carried out by Overground Workers (OGWs)-locals with clean records and no direct links to terror groups. This makes them almost invisible to security agencies and allows them to melt back into society after the act.
This tactic is what officials are calling "hybrid militancy"-a new-age terror strategy where the killers are faceless, and their identities remain hidden even after the crime.
What makes TRF different?
Name & Identity: Unlike older groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e-Muhammad, TRF does not use religious names. Experts say this is a way to present the violence as political rather than religious.
Secrecy: TRF does not post pictures of its members or leaders. They stay anonymous and avoid being seen in public.
Technology Use: TRF records attacks with body cameras and shares the videos online to inspire recruits. In one such video from November 2020, two soldiers were shown being killed on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
TRF's Secret Chat Rooms
TRF recruits and coordinates through encrypted platforms like Telegram, Rocket.Chat, and Matrix. Investigators tracking its digital footprint uncovered a secret Matrix chat room with around 65 active members. Over several days of observation, it became clear the room was tightly controlled by two administrators who steered discussions, issued threats against the Indian state and pro-India Kashmiris, and disseminated propaganda-including videos, photos, and claims of attacks carried out across the Valley.
Faceless killers in the Kahmir Valley
TRF keeps its cadre anonymous, never revealing names or images, and avoids glorifying its operatives. This isn't out of modesty-it's a calculated PR move to appear as a decentralised resistance force instead of a Pakistan-sponsored jihadi group.
TRF frequently takes to social media platforms like Telegram, Facebook, and Twitter, issuing threats and claiming responsibility for attacks. But it doesn't stop there. It tries to justify the killings with twisted narratives.
In December 2020, jeweler Satpal Nichal was shot dead. TRF claimed he was aiding a "colonial project" and linked to the RSS.
In October 2021, prominent pharmacist Makhan Lal Bindroo was gunned down. TRF accused him of organizing secret RSS meetings while pretending to be a doctor.
These are not random attacks-they are deliberate strikes meant to fracture communities, spark fear, and sabotage peace.
The Illusion of a 'Local Movement'
TRF paints itself as a homegrown political resistance force fighting "invasion" and "fascism." It claims to be made up of Kashmiri youth, has no known leadership hierarchy, and refuses association with pan-Islamic jihadist ideology-at least on the surface.
But behind this mask is the same old game. TRF may claim to be homegrown, but its actions mirror the agenda of long-established Pakistan-based terror networks.
The group's main goal is to disrupt India's efforts to fully integrate Kashmir. And by targeting non-locals and minorities, TRF hopes to discourage migration, derail elections, and undermine development projects. It wants to sow fear, polarise communities, and lure more Kashmiri youth into terror.
Not Invisible to Indian Forces
Despite TRF's secretive methods, Indian forces are not sitting idle.
- Intelligence networks have been revamped.
- Surveillance is tighter than ever.
- Coordination between Army, police, and central agencies has grown stronger.
Over the past few years, dozens of hybrid militants and OGWs have been neutralised. These kills serve as proof: no matter how silent or invisible they try to be, India is tracking them down.
A Grim Reminder in Pahalgam
Just days before the Amarnath Yatra, the terror returned to one of Kashmir's most beautiful towns-Pahalgam. An attack on a tourist bus killed 26 civilians, reviving memories of early 2000s militancy.
Locals responded with grief and anger. Hotels opened their doors to stranded tourists. Traders lit candles for the dead. "We've worked too hard to bring peace back. This attack is betrayal," said Bashir Ahmad, a hotelier.
Pulwama, Balakot, and the Message That Still Stands
India has already shown how it responds to terror.
On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber from JeM killed 40 CRPF jawans in Pulwama.
Twelve days later, the Indian Air Force bombed JeM training camps in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan.
That operation sent a chilling message: India will not just defend. It will strike.
India's Final Word: "Ghus ke maarenge"
If TRF thinks hiding behind fake names, local accents, and social media posts makes them smarter-they're mistaken.
Indian forces have proven time and again: they can find and eliminate threats, whether they come wearing uniforms, civilian clothes, or digital masks.
As one senior official put it: "We don't need borders to strike back. If you hit us, we will come after you. Ghus ke maarenge. No matter where you hide."
This is not just policy. It's a promise.
