Andhra Pradesh Tragedy: Inquiry Ordered as Children Die from Adulterated Food

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has initiated a high-level investigation into the deaths of three children at an orphanage in Anakapalli district. He also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families or guardians of each deceased child.

Inquiry After Andhra Food Tragedy

Three children, who consumed adulterated food two days ago, succumbed to health complications early on Monday. Other affected children are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Initially, it was reported that four children had died due to food poisoning at the orphanage in Kailasapattanam village, Kotauratla mandal. However, the latest statement revised this number to three.

Details of the Incident

The Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the incident and sought more details from Human Resource Development Minister Nara Lokesh. He directed Lokesh to ensure better treatment for the affected children. Lokesh identified the deceased children as Joshua, Bhavani, and Shradda. He also communicated with Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav and the collectors of Anakapalli and Alluri Sitarama Raju districts regarding the incident.

Lokesh stated on X, "I have directed officials to extend better treatment to 17 students who are undergoing treatment at Anakapalli area hospital. The government will stand by the families of the deceased children." The CM has instructed officials to take stringent action against those responsible for this tragedy.

Police Investigation

Anakapalli district superintendent of police M Deepika Patil reported that negligence towards ailing children led to their deaths due to food poisoning. The children died at their homes early Monday after consuming adulterated food donated to their hostel, which they had for dinner on Saturday. Initially thought to be orphans, it was later clarified that these children had families who had entrusted them to Kiran Kumar's care.

Patil explained that Kiran Kumar runs a local church and a hostel for these children. They attended local schools where mid-day meals provided lunch, while breakfast and dinner were met through donations. Police suspect that leftover food from a local death ceremony caused severe vomiting, loose motions, and dehydration, leading to the deaths.

Current Situation

Out of 86 children at the hostel, 30 are undergoing treatment, with one in critical condition. The rest are reportedly doing well. District authorities have traced and medically examined all the children.

The Chief Minister has ordered stringent action against those responsible for this incident. The government is committed to supporting the families of the deceased and ensuring better treatment for those affected.
