Revealed: Top Three Source Countries of Foreign Tourists to India in 2022
Official data reveals that the US, UK, and Bangladesh were the leading sources of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) to India in 2022. The country saw a significant increase in FTAs compared to previous years, contributing to a substantial rise in foreign exchange earnings.
In a recent statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism, India, it was revealed that the United States, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom were the top three countries contributing to foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India for 2022. This data was shared as part of official statistics released on World Tourism Day.

The report highlighted that there has been a significant increase in FTAs this year compared to previous years. In 2022, India welcomed about 6.19 million FTAs which is considerably higher than the 1.52 million recorded in 2021 during the peak of global travel restrictions due to Covid-19 pandemic. The current numbers are still lower than pre-pandemic levels - with approximately 10.93 million FTAs being recorded in 2019 – but they show promising signs of recovery for India's tourism industry.
Revival Post-Pandemic
G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Tourism had previously expressed optimism about the revival of tourism industry post-pandemic during an address at Rajya Sabha in April this year. These latest figures seem to validate his positive outlook towards recovery and growth within this sector.
Economic Impact
Alongside revealing source countries and FTA numbers, the Ministry's statement also shed light on another crucial aspect - foreign exchange earnings from tourism. According to their data, there has been an impressive surge in these earnings from Rs 65,070 crore ($8.21 billion) recorded in 2021 to Rs 1,34,543 crore ($16.93 billion) this year.Further underlining its importance on a global scale,
India’s Global Ranking
India holds a respectable position when it comes to international tourism receipts measured in US dollars with a share standing at around 2.08 per cent. In terms of global ranking, India holds the 14th position in the world. This not only highlights the significant role tourism plays in India's economy but also its growing influence on global tourism.
In conclusion, while it is clear that there is still some way to go before reaching pre-pandemic levels of foreign tourist arrivals, these figures are a testament to the resilience and adaptability of India’s tourism sector. The increase in FTAs from key countries like USA, Bangladesh and UK alongside higher foreign exchange earnings indicate promising signs of recovery and growth for Indian tourism industry post pandemic. As we continue to navigate through this new normal, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve further and what strategies will be employed by authorities to sustain this upward trajectory.
