"Consumers are bearing the brunt of the rising prices of tomatoes in Uttarkashi. People are not even willing to buy them. In Gangotri, Yamunotri, tomatoes are going at Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg," ANI quoted Rakesh, a vegetable seller, as saying.

The rise in the price is attributed to the prevailing heatwave in key tomato-growing areas and heavy rains, leading to a disruption in supply chains. More importantly, tomatoes have a lower shelf life, which is also believed to be having a bearing on their prices.

Not Just in Uttarakhand, the people across the country are facing the brunt of the price rise.

Days ago, the price of tomato (per kg) crossed Rs 150-mark in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In Maharashtra, the price ranges from Rs 120-150. The price of tomatoes scaled a new high of Rs 160 per kg in retail markets across Mumbai on Tuesday.

A kg of tomato is over Rs 100-120 in Karnataka's capital Bengaluru.

In a bid to bring some respite to the consumers, the Tamil Nadu government has started selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate of Rs 60 per kg at ration shops in Chennai. In the market, a kg of tomato is being sold in the range of Rs 100-120.
