'To Browbeat And Bully Others Is...’: PM Modi Takes Dig At Congress Over Lawyers' Letter To CJI

After approximately 600 lawyers sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a swipe at the Congress party on Thursday.

"Using intimidation tactics is typical of the Congress culture. Five decades ago, they advocated for a 'committed judiciary' - they shamelessly demand commitment from others for their own selfish interests but refuse to commit to the nation," the PM stated in a post on X. "It's no surprise that 1.4 billion Indians are turning away from them," he concluded.

Earlier today, more than 600 lawyers from across India penned a letter to the Chief Justice of India, expressing grave concerns about what they perceive as political and professional pressures seeking to influence judicial decisions.

Titled 'Judiciary under threat - safeguarding judiciary from political and professional pressure,' the letter was signed by notable lawyers such as senior advocate Harish Salve, Manan Kumar Mishra, Adish Agarwal, Chetan Mittal, Pinky Anand, and Swaroopama Chaturvedi, among others.

The letter accuses a specific interest group of trying to undermine the integrity of the judiciary. This group, the lawyers claim, is using pressure tactics to sway judicial outcomes, particularly in cases involving political figures and corruption allegations. These actions, the lawyers argue, pose a significant threat to the democratic fabric and the trust in judicial processes. They highlight several concerning methods, including the "propagation of false narratives about a so-called 'golden era' of the judiciary," aimed at discrediting current proceedings and eroding public confidence in the courts.
