TMC Leaders Meet Bengal Governor, Slam EC for Unjust Detention

Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has voiced strong criticism against the detention of party leaders by Delhi Police during a peaceful protest outside the Election Commission's office, labeling the incident as a dark moment for democracy. The protest, which saw TMC leaders, including MPs and former MPs, being forcibly removed and placed into vehicles by the police, has sparked controversy and raised questions about the role of the Election Commission (EC) in the matter.

TMC Slams EC Over Detention

Banerjee, who was part of an 11-member delegation that visited Raj Bhavan to meet with Governor C V Ananda Bose, expressed his disappointment with the EC's actions. He stated that the commission could not shirk its responsibility for what he described as the unjust treatment of Bengal's representatives. The delegation included notable TMC figures such as Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Bratya Basu, and Sashi Panja.

The TMC delegation's visit to Raj Bhavan aimed to highlight their concerns to the governor, urging him to intervene and request the Election Commission to investigate the alleged collusion between the BJP and central agencies like the NIA and ED. Banerjee underscored the importance of addressing these issues, particularly in light of allegations regarding an NIA official's meeting with a BJP leader following the announcement of poll dates.

Furthermore, Banerjee pointed out what he perceives as a discrepancy in the EC's actions, noting that while several officials in West Bengal were transferred immediately after poll dates were announced, complaints against central agency officials have seemingly been ignored. This has led to accusations of bias and a lack of impartiality on the part of the EC.

The TMC's grievances extend to their demand for changes at the helm of key central agencies, including the CBI, NIA, ED, and Income Tax Department. This demand was part of their dharna outside the Election Commission's office following a meeting with the full bench of the EC. The party seeks to ensure a level playing field in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and to prevent what they view as the misuse of central agencies against opposition parties and leaders.

Governor C V Ananda Bose has reportedly promised to relay the TMC's complaints to the Election Commission and inform them about any response. This development comes amid heightened tensions between political parties and concerns over electoral fairness in India.
