TMC Claims BJP Misuses Probe Agencies in Clash Over Arrested Leader
In a recent development from Kolkata, the political atmosphere intensifies as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) engage in a heated exchange over the arrest of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, a prominent figure from Sandeshkhali. The BJP has levied serious allegations against Sheikh, including involvement in human trafficking and drug peddling, while the TMC counters by accusing the BJP of manipulating central agencies against their party.

During a press conference held on Tuesday, BJP state general secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay presented accusations against Sheikh, claiming his involvement in illicit activities such as drug trafficking from Afghanistan and human smuggling from Myanmar and Bangladesh. According to Chattopadhyay, these operations were linked to significant financial transactions. Sheikh, who has been suspended by the TMC, was apprehended by state police on February 29 on charges of land-grabbing and sexual harassment in the Sandeshkhali area.
Chattopadhyay further alleged that Sheikh maintained connections with high-ranking TMC leaders, including ministers, and had managed to evade consequences for his actions until his recent arrest. He accused Sheikh of running a vast empire through illegal activities, including the operation of private fisheries known as 'bheries', and emphasized the BJP's demand for truth and accountability.
In response to these allegations, TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized the BJP's narrative, suggesting it was part of a broader strategy to use central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to fabricate charges against TMC leaders and grassroots workers. Ghosh accused the BJP of attempting to tarnish the TMC's image through these agencies, which he claimed had become extensions of the BJP.
Ghosh also stated that if Sheikh is found guilty of any charges, he would face legal consequences. However, he condemned the BJP's efforts to malign the TMC's reputation through what he described as a misuse of investigative agencies.
This confrontation between the BJP and TMC highlights ongoing tensions in West Bengal politics, with both parties standing firm on their respective positions regarding Shahjahan Sheikh's arrest and the allegations surrounding him. As this political drama unfolds, it underscores the complex interplay between party politics and law enforcement in India.
