Tirupati Laddu Controversy: Sacred Prasad Gifted To PM Modi, Sent To Ayodhya

The innocuous Tirupati laddu, a revered sweet offering from the Tirumala temple, has become the center of a significant controversy in Andhra Pradesh, with accusations of adulteration tainting its sacred reputation.

The controversy erupted when Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged that substandard ghee, laced with animal fat, was used to prepare the Tirupati laddu during the tenure of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Naidu's claims quickly ignited a political and public uproar.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the temple's governing body, validated these concerns by citing lab reports that confirmed the adulteration. TTD Executive Officer J. Shyamala Rao announced that the suppliers involved had been blacklisted, and legal actions were being taken against them.

The gravity of the situation prompted the central government to intervene, with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda requesting a detailed report from the Andhra Pradesh government. Nadda assured the public that appropriate measures would be taken once the findings were reviewed.

The Tirupati laddu, which has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag and is cherished for its unique taste and religious significance, has been a part of temple tradition for centuries. The controversy is seen by many not only as a breach of trust but also as an attack on their faith.

Throughout the years, Andhra Pradesh's chief ministers, regardless of party, have gifted the laddu along with idols and temple-branded shawls to dignitaries, including Prime Ministers. Between 2019 and 2024, former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy presented these sacred offerings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visits to Delhi, according to reports.

In early 2024, over one lakh Tirupati laddus were airlifted to Ayodhya for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Mandir. Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ayodhya temple, expressed shock and outrage over the allegations of animal fat in the laddus, calling it "unforgivable."

"If animal fat was mixed in the 'prasad', strict action must be taken," Das said. "Vaishnav saints and devotees don't even use garlic and onions, so this is a mockery of the Hindu faith. A proper investigation is necessary, and those responsible should face justice."

Amid the mounting uproar, Jagan Mohan Reddy dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing Naidu of using the controversy to distract from dissatisfaction with his leadership. "This is diversion politics. Naidu is trying to use God for his political gains," Reddy stated, calling the accusations a "fabricated story."

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged a thorough investigation into the issue. In a post on X, he expressed concern about the defilement of the sacred offering and emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity of religious practices.

"The reports about the defilement of the Prasad at the Sri Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati are disturbing," Gandhi said. "This issue will hurt millions of devotees, and authorities across India must protect the sanctity of our religious spaces."

The controversy has left the public deeply unsettled, with many calling for accountability and transparency to restore faith in one of the most revered temples in India.
