New Study Uncovers Dangerous Steroid Marketing Trend on TikTok
The social media platform TikTok has been accused of serving as a marketing channel for vendors selling steroids and other bodybuilding drugs, according to a report released by the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). This claim is disputed by TikTok. The CCDH's study suggests that popular videos encouraging the use of these products for aesthetic or athletic enhancement are being posted by influencers who frequently minimize the associated risks. This follows a warning issued by the US Food and Drug Administration in April concerning performance-enhancing drugs being marketed to teenagers and young adults on social media platforms.
Influencers Marketing Steroids

"They're being marketed to young men by influencers who are deliberately saying, 'If you want to be like Captain America, you've got to take these drugs,'" said Imran Ahmed, founder and CEO of CCDH. The role of influencers in promoting such substances underlines how digital platforms can be exploited for potentially harmful practices.
Widespread Reach Of Promotional Videos
The research findings reveal an alarming trend: over the past three years, TikTok videos promoting what researchers termed "steroid-like drugs" have garnered more than 587 million views in the United States alone. Notably, 72 per cent of those views came from users aged between 18 and 24 years old - an age group particularly vulnerable to peer pressure and societal expectations regarding physical appearance.
Allegations Against Influencers And Websites
The report further alleges that several dozen influencers promoted websites that sold these performance-enhancing drugs. If proven true, this not only raises ethical questions about influencer marketing but also legal ones considering the potential health hazards posed by unregulated steroid usage.
In conclusion, while social media platforms like TikTok provide opportunities for creative expression and connectivity among users worldwide, they can also serve as conduits for potentially harmful content and practices. The allegations of influencers using these platforms to promote steroids and other bodybuilding drugs underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and vigilance on digital platforms. It's crucial that social media companies take proactive measures to prevent such misuse, especially when it poses a threat to the health and wellbeing of young users.
