This man wants to exchange demonetised currency after acquittal in IPL betting case
This petition comes at a time when several others have moved the Supreme Court seeking extension of the deadline to deposit old notes.
The Supreme Court will hear a very interesting plea in which a person acquitted in the IPL fixing scandal has sought to exchange demonetised currency. Abishek Shukla who was acquitted along with former cricketer S Sreeshanth in the IPL spot fixing scandal.

In his plea before the SC, he says that the police had seized Rs 5.5 lakh from him. However following his acquittal, the court had ordered the police to return the money. He said that the police had returned the money only in February 2017, three months after the decision on demonetisation was made.
He said that he was not at fault and could not exchange the currency since it was lying with the Delhi police. He said that once the money was returned to him, he had gone to the RBI to deposit the notes. However his request was turned down on the ground the deadline to deposit old notes by December 30th 2016 was over.
The SC took note of his petition and directed him to produce the seizure memo that was prepared by the Delhi police. This document would bear the specifics about the seized currency the court noted.
This petition comes at a time when several others have moved the Supreme Court seeking extension of the deadline to deposit old notes. It has been contended that the RBI closed the window to deposit old notes before the prescribed period. The centre stated that there is no question of extending the deadline since a law had already been passed stating that possession of old currency is a criminal offence.
