There has been a lot of controversy around the movie The Kerala Story, with many seeking a ban on the movie.

There has been a lot of debate around the number of girls from Kerala who have been converted to Islam and forced into the Islamic State. While the numbers can be debated, there are however some documented cases probed by the Kerala Police and the Central agencies that speak about women from the state being tricked or trapped and then forced into joining the Islamic State.

Nimisha alias Fathima

In this context let us revisit the case of Nimisha, who the agencies say was converted forcibly and then sent off to Afghanistan.

While this incident took place in 2017, Nimisha alias Fathima was arrested by the Afghanistan police in 2020. During her interrogation, she said that she had been trapped by a Pakistan backed group which was into conversions.

Nimisha according to her confession got married in the seventh month of her pregnancy, following which she left for Afghanistan. During his questioning she said that once in Afghanistan she would lead a truly Islamic life. " I was trained for Jihad and was told that my job would be to establish the Caliphate,"she also said during her questioning.

The other case in question is that of Sonia Sebastin. Following her conversion she was renamed Ayesha. In a video that was released by her which was played by Strat News Global, she said that she and her husband Abdullah Rashid were upset with the Islamic State. She said that she had moved to Afghanistan to lead a purely Islamic lifestyle under the rule of the Caliphate. However on reaching there, they realised that people were not even visiting the Mosques.

An Intelligence Bureau official tells OneIndia that the problem does exist. Not just in India, but in other parts of the world as well. The Islamic State follows a pattern of recruiting sex-slaves and expects them to increase the population. This was largely seen in the case of the Yazidi girls in Iraq.

Laila Khoudeida, secretary of the Yazidi Organisation had told this correspondent that their community are seen by the Islamic State as the one who worships devils. She said that the women are taken as sex slaves and the numbers had only increased as the Islamic State rose. The Islamic State has however now changed track after it faced severe losses in Iraq and Syria. It has now moved largely towards an online propaganda, where it expects that people carry out strikes on their own or as the agencies terms them as lone wolf strikes.
