The Impact Of Chandrababu Naidu's Arrest In Andhra Politics

For the first time, a former Chief Minister - TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu - of Andhra has been arrested in a corruption case.

In a career spanning over 40 years, this is also the first time that Naidu has been arrested on corruption charges. He was arrested on Saturday in Nandyal town in connection with a fraud case involving misappropriation of funds from the Skill Development Corporation, leading to a loss of Rs 300 crore to the state government.

A local Court in Vijayawada on Sunday remanded the TDP chief in judicial custody for 14 days in an alleged multi-crore corruption scam. As a mark of protest, the statewide bandh call has been given by the Telugu Desam Party on Monday and it has met a lukewarm response with business as usual at many parts of the state during morning hours.

The Impact Of Naidu's Arrest

The arrest comes just months before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls when political temperatures are soaring and at a time when the TDP is struggling to return to power in the state while trying to project Naidu's son Nara Lokesh, who is on a marathon statewide foot march, as the future leader of the party.

Considering that both state and national elections are scheduled to be held in April-May next year, it's speculated that the perceived public sympathy for Naidu might be short-lived.

The YSRCP party, led by CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, had swept away the 2019 Assembly elections with 151 of the total 175 seats leaving the TDP with a meagre 23 seats. In the 2019 election, Naidu's vote percentage in Kuppam for the first time slipped below 60 per cent to 55.18 per cent, with some votes split between the JSP and the BJP candidates while the YSRCP's K Chandramouli received 38 per cent votes.

On the other hand, YSRCP has been deeply rooted in the state, with the CM directing his party to defeat Naidu in his own Kuppam constituency in the 2024 elections, with a goal to annihilate the TDP. The CM has been vocal about defeating Naidu in his own Kuppam constituency in the upcoming 2024 election and "decimate" the TDP.

Rise of The Heir

Following his party's loss in the assembly elections, Naidu had announced at an emotional outing in Kurnool that the 2024 polls would be his last if the TDP was not voted into power. Since then, Naidu has conducted public meetings and roadshows, often drawing large crowds. These gatherings frequently resulted in the 'Quit Jagan, Save AP' slogan, critical of the present government's policies.

Observers state that Naidu plans to hand over the TDP leadership to his son Nara Lokesh if they win in 2024. Holding a key position in the party as its national general secretary, Lokesh is currently using his 4,000 km long padyatra, 'Yuva Galam', to rally for the party, with senior party leaders championing this as a game-changer for the TDP's comeback.

Future of Alliance with BJP

The developments could potentially have an impact on any ongoing talks to align with parties ahead of the next state elections. Observers have been speculating about a possible tie-up between TDP and the BJP after Naidu flew down to Delhi in June for a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda. The first meeting after the two parties had a bitter parting of ways in 2018.

Also in case the arrest drama is not short-lived and continues into election season, the impact on BJP votes in Telugu states will have to be seen, say political analysts.

Arrest Dents TDP Image

Analysts say the development could leave a dent on the clean image of the party projected by Naidu's supporters.

Senior journalist and political analyst Telakapalli Ravi told PTI, "The arrest may dent the image of the party. No one is beyond the judicial process. Every irregularity has to be probed and fixed." He further said that even if Jagan (CM Jagan Mohan Reddy) wants to "fix" Naidu, he cannot do it without the centre's "cooperation".

Naidu's Journey In Politics

Naidu, who began his political career in the Congress, later switched over to the TDP after it came into power in the early 1980s, when his father-in-law and popular actor N T Rama Rao became the chief minister.

He played a key role in the party and the government until the early 1990s. In 1995, Naidu dethroned the NTR government in a political coup and became chief minister with the support of disgruntled legislators.

Naidu won the polls in 1999. In the subsequent elections in 2004, Naidu lost to the Congress. His bête noire Y S Rajasekhara Reddy became the CM.

After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Jagan emerged as the principal rival to Naidu.

While the TDP managed to get a majority in the 2014 polls and formed the government as an NDA partner, Naidu later had a falling out with the BJP and joined hands with opposition parties such as the Congress and TMC.
