Import Ban: The import of civilian weapons has been banned in India since 1984, meaning such a weapon must be sourced from an authorized Indian dealer under the strict Arms Act, 1959.

Smuggling Allegations: Security reports frequently link Beretta pistols to illegal smuggling routes, often across the Pakistan border, or via sea/air.

Political Ammunition: The NDA has seized on this, linking it to the 2023 Umesh Pal murder case, where UP mafia leader Atiq Ahmed (murdered April 15, 2023) allegedly possessed a smuggled Beretta pistol and mentioned its cross-border smuggling connection.
