Tehelka Expose: The Hidden Web of Cyber-Fraud, Gaming Hacks & Borrowed Bank Accounts
News Magazine Tehelka's special investigative report has uncovered an elaborate system through which cybercriminals acquire unused bank accounts, hack financial and gaming platforms, and funnel stolen money through borrowed accounts belonging mostly to economically vulnerable individuals. The report exposes how organised groups exploit gaps in security for financial gain.
The Investigation Report
This investigation reveals how cybercriminals assemble a layered operation - recruiting account holders, colluding with insiders inside banks, and strategically targeting gaming apps - all orchestrated by a small but tightly knit gang based in Kolkata. Hackers prefer accounts belonging to people with limited income, promising them a small commission to use their accounts as temporary safehouses for illicit money transfers.

When Tehelka's reporter met Kolkata-based hacker Jitu Singh, he openly described how these accounts are used:
"I need bank accounts- savings accounts, current accounts, and even corporate accounts. Currently, I manage several such accounts. We acquire these accounts by paying commissions to their owners, who allow us to park money stolen from others' accounts. This is done by hacking into the victims' accounts. The people who provide us with their accounts receive a 10% commission," Tehelka quoted Jitu Singh, a Kolkata-based hacker, as saying during an undercover operation.
The Insider Connection: How They Obtain Sensitive Bank Data
One of the most disturbing revelations from Tehelka's investigation is how the fraudsters claim they get customer banking data.
"For stealing money, I procure the details of people's bank accounts directly from the bank itself, often from government-owned banks. The manager of one such Kolkata branch is a close associate of mine. He provides me with sensitive customer information, including ATM pins, IFSC codes, account numbers, and more. Using this information, we steal money and deposit it into accounts we have borrowed from others," Jitu confessed during the covert operation.

Jitu told Tehelka's undercover reporter (posing as a possible collaborator) how he sources these accounts and why people agree to lend theirs:
"You provide us with bank accounts where we can deposit money stolen from other people's accounts. Those who let us use their accounts receive a 10% commission," he said.
The Gaming Fraud: Targeting Online Players
Beyond just bank accounts, the gang's operations stretch into online gaming - a rapidly expanding but often under-secured space.
"We are a gang of five based in Kolkata, led by Mohammed Imran. We not only hack personal bank accounts but also target online games like Dream11. In online games, we only hack the accounts of those who are on the losing side because it's harder to detect the fraud. The losers assume they lost the money in the game itself rather than through hacking," explained Mohammed Tausif, another core member of the gang.
Tausif added more about their territory and scale:
"I have been hacking bank accounts for the past three years. So far, our group, which includes Shiraz and Aatif, has hacked 12-13 online gaming accounts and numerous personal bank accounts. All five of us live in Kolkata, near the airport, at a place called Majumder Pada," he told Tehelka.
The Undercover Conversations (with Tehelka)
To fully illustrate how the gang operates, here is a detailed reconstruction of Tehelka's conversations with Jitu and Tausif, along with English translations to ensure transparency for all readers.
Conversation with Jitu (in Delhi)
Reporter- Bhai, bank account... matlab?
(Brother, what do you exactly mean by "bank account"?)
Jitu- Saving aur corporate dono..
(Both savings and corporate accounts.)
Reporter- Saving aur corporate.. sirf account chahiye.?
(Just the account, right?)
Jitu- hmm.
Jitu (continues)- Accounts matlab ....account number hua ..sim hua.
(By "accounts" I mean the bank account number and the SIM linked with that account.)
Reporter- Sim..?
Jitu- Account mein hum log sim dete hain na...wo number wala sim.
(We link a SIM to the account - the SIM that has the phone number.)
Reporter- Kya karega uska ?
(What do you do with that?)
Jitu- ...jo bahut gareeb hai na.. jinko khane ka nahi hai, paisa nahi hai, jo gareeb hai kaam nahi kar sakta wo log ke account mein hum deta hai.
(We use accounts of people who are very poor - people who don't have money or job; we put the funds in their accounts.)
Jitu (continues)- Hum log gaming ka paisa maartey hain..aur yahan jama kartey hain. Ye sab account mein hota hai.
(We loot money from gaming, and deposit it into these accounts.)
Reporter- Ye samjha mujhe detail mein.. mujhe samajh nahi aaya, mujhe pata hi nahi hai kuch. Ye mere liye nahi cheeez hai, mujhko samjha.
(Explain this to me in detail - I don't understand it at all, it's completely alien to me.)
Jitu- Gaming matlab cricket, football... jitney bhi gaming apps hain.
(By gaming I mean cricket, football ... all kinds of gaming apps.)
Reporter- Jaise Dream 11 ho gaya ?
(Like Dream11?)
Jitu- Haan... Jitna bhi gaming app hain.. usmein to fund lagta hai.. roz ka aap pakad lo kitna fund lagne wala hai... lagane ko bahut hai. Croro admi hai, 10 rupiya bhi lagata hai... is samay hum log betha rehta hai.
(Yes ... money is put in daily in all these gaming apps ... there are millions playing, even people are betting Rs 10 ... and we are constantly watching.)
Reporter- Kahan betha rehta hai ?
(Where do you sit and watch?)
Jitu - Dekhtey hain ki ID mein kitna fund lagne wala hai.
(We check how much money is being put into each user ID.)
Reporter- Id mein kitna fund laga hai, mein samjha nahi.?
(I don't understand how you do that - how do you see how much fund is in an ID?)
Jitu- Jaisa aap cricket mein lagata hai... jaise India-Pakistan match hua aap 10,000 hazar rupiya laga diya.
(Like you bet Rs 10,000 on a cricket match ...)
Reporter- Satta laga diya.?
(So you're saying you placed a bet?)
Jitu- Jo ID hai na wo hum logo ke pass rehta hai... hum log dekhta hai kaunsi Id mein sabse zyada paisa laga hua hai.... wo ID se paisa gayab karta hai.
(That ID - the one with the most money - stays with us ... we take the money from it.)
Reporter- Kaise?.. illegal tarike se.?
(How? Illegally?)
Jitu- Haan, uska 2-4 Id hota hai... aap bethey bethey samajh hi nahi paogey, paisa gayab ho jayega.
(Yes - they have 2-4 IDs ... while you're sitting, you don't even realize, and the money vanishes.)
Reporter- Account se paisa gayab ho jayega... hacking bhi kar rahe ho..?
(So the money disappears from their account ... are you hacking?)
Jitu- Hum nahi matlab, mera dost log karta hai..
(Not me - but my friends do it.)
Jitu (continues) - Wo log roz maarta hai, aur roz usko account chahiye.
(They do it daily, and every day they need new accounts.)
Reporter- Usmein rakhne ke liye?
(For depositing money?)
Tehelka's undercover reporting reveals that this cycle repeats constantly: money from gaming apps is hijacked and parked in third-party accounts, all managed carefully by the group.
The Mechanics of Commission, Limits & Withdrawal
Jitu spelled out what kind of accounts they prefer, and how much they pay to those who agree to lend their account.
Jitu- Saving account hota hai to usmein ATM ka limit kya hota.. 50K. Aur ek account mein 1.5 lakh tak ka kaam, 1.5 lakh ka humko 10 percent... jiska bhi account hoga usko mil jayega.... Corporate account hota hai.. current account ke upper.. usmein hota hai crore ka.
(A savings account has ATM withdrawal limit around ₹50,000. We can move up to ₹1.5 lakh in a day, and we give 10% of that. For corporate or current accounts, the limit can go up to crores.)
Jitu (continues) - Usmein samajh lo humko 25 percent milta hai.
(Understand it like this - in these big accounts, we get 25%.)
Reporter- To aapko basically account chahiye ?
(So what you basically want is the account?)
Jitu- Kisi ka bhi... koi bhi ATM ka limit ho.. corporate koi bhi ho.
(Any account - whether ATM-limit or corporate - we'll take it.)
Reporter- Matlab ATM se Rs 50,000 tak nikal saktey hain.. ek din mein.
(So you can withdraw up to ₹50,000 a day from the ATM?)
Jitu- Haan.
Reporter- Usko kya fayda jo account dega.?
(What's in it for the person who gives you their account?)
Jitu- Roz ka 1.5 lakh ka transfer hoga uske account mein... 1.5 lakh ka 10 percent.. Rs 15,000 usko milta rahega.
(There will be ₹1.5 lakh transferred into their account every day ... they'll keep 10%, i.e. ₹15,000.)
Reporter- Matlab jo tumhare pass account hain usmein tum paisa daaltey ho.?
(So you deposit money into those accounts?)
Jitu- Hmm.
Reporter- Phir usko nikaltey hogey apne use ke liye.. to jiska account hai usko kitna paisa detey ho..?
(Then the person whose account it is - how much do you give them?)
Jitu- Usko 10 percent.
(10%.)
Insider Manipulation
Tehelka's investigation exposes how Jitu claims to get very sensitive banking details from inside a bank.
Reporter- Kya- kya deta hai tu account ke detail?
(What details do you get from the bank?)
Jitu- Hum deta hai, ATM, account ka number aur pin.
(We get the ATM PIN, account number, and other details.)
Reporter- ATM ka pin wo kaise mil jayega tujhko?
(How do you get the ATM PIN?)
Jitu- Bank mein sab mil jata hai.
(Everything is available inside the bank.)
Reporter- Bank wale bata detey hain?
(Do bank employees willingly give it?)
Jitu- Haan usko account number, IFSC code, sab de deta hai.
(Yes - they give account number, IFSC code, everything.)
Reporter- Kaun si bank ka abhi tak tune zyada diya hai..?
(Which bank have you primarily used so far?)
Jitu- XXXXX (actual bank name was redacted by Tehelka)
Reporter- XXXXX, sarkari bank ka, kisne diya tujhe uski detail ?
(That's a government bank. Who gave you the details?)
Jitu- Aa jati hai.. XXXX bank to aisa hai ki wo mera ghar hai..
(It comes easily ... that bank, for me, is like home.)
Reporter- Kaun si branch XXXX ki Kolkata mein?
(Which branch in Kolkata?)
Jitu- XXXXX
[Branch name redacted]
Reporter- XXXXX branch Kolkata ki.?
(The [branch] in Kolkata?)
Reporter (continues) - Manager kaun hai ?
(Who is the branch manager?)
Jitu- XXXX hai koi... manager change hota rehta hai... wo aap mere saath jab bhi jayega,.. koi bhi bank mein jayega aapko line mein lagna padega, magar mere saath jaiyega, to nahi.. manager bhi khada rahega.
(Someone called XXXX ... the manager changes, but whenever he comes with me, he won't make me wait in line - he stands aside for me.)
Meeting With Tausif: Deeper into the Gang's Operations
Tehelka's team arranged a second meeting - this time in Noida - via Jitu, who called in Tausif, a key member of the gang.

During this sit-down, Tausif offered a candid look at how they hack online gaming accounts, especially of "losers."
Reporter- Kis tareeke se kaam karte ho aap?
(In what way do you operate?)
Tausif- Hamara kaam to gaming ka hai, jaise ki gaming ka account hota hai... online game account usey mein hack karta hoon.
(Our work is mostly gaming - I hack online gaming accounts.)
Reporter- Jaise Dream 11 hua?
(Like Dream11?)
Tausif- Dream 11 hua, Binjo mein jitney bhi.. aur bhi online game hain.. jaise aap khel rahe ho aapka naam show ho gaya, wahan se hum hack karke apne account mein le letey hain.
(English: Yes - Dream11, Binjo ... many others. When you play and your name shows up, we hack and transfer the money to our own account.)
Reporter- Samjha nahi mein.?
(I don't understand.)
Tausif- Jaise aap game khel rahe hain, aur aap game jeet gaye to wo paise aapke account mein aa jayega agar aap loss hotey ho, wahan se aapko pata nahi legega wahan se hum account ko hack kar letey hain aur us paise ko apne account mein transfer kar letey hain.
(Suppose you win, then the winning money goes to your account; but if you lose, you don't realize that we hack that account and move the money to ours.)
Reporter- Loss wale ka kyun hack karte ho jeetne wale ka kyun nahi ?
(Why hack the losing accounts, not the winners'?)
Tausif- Nahi aisa nahi hota jo aapko jo win dikhayega wo aapke account mein dikhayega, jo loss money hoga wo aapko show nahi hoga, aapko to yehi lagega ki aap haar chuke ho, lekin usko hum hack karke apne account mein lete hain.
(It's not that simple - what you see as "win" may not reflect reality, but when you lose, we hack and take that money.)
He further admitted:
Tausif- 12-13 kar diye hain.
(We have hacked 12-13 gaming accounts.)
Reporter- 12-13 aapne khud ne..?
(Have you done them personally?)
Tausif- Nahi hamari ek team hai..
(No, it's our team.)
Reporter- Kitne log hain?
(How many people are in the team?)
Tausif- Hum 5 log hain..ek main hoon, ek Shiraz hai, Aatif hai, Mohd Imran hai.
(We are five - me, Shiraz, Aatif, and Mohd Imran.)
Reporter- 5 logon ka group hai, usmein head kaun hai..?
(In the group of five, who is the head?)
Tausif- Head hamara Mohammed Imran hai..
(Our head is Mohammed Imran.)
Reporter- Aap pancho Kolkata se ho, kis jagah rehte ho..?
(You five are from Kolkata - where do you live?)
Tausif- Airport ke pass hai.
(Near the airport.)
Reporter- Kaunsi jagah kehlati hai
(What is that place called?)
Tausif- Majumdar pada.
(Majumdar Pada.)
Reporter- Majumdar pada?
(Majumdar Pada?)
The Money Trail & Revenue for Collaborators
In this Tehelka SIT report, Tausif and Jitu together described how stolen funds are distributed, how much they move daily, and how much their "account lenders" are paid.
Tausif said: "Gaming mein, jaise aapne 2500 lagaye hain, aap ki tarah auron ne bhi jaise 4-5 log.. ab hum 5 bande hain, hum sabhi 50k-50k bhi rakhtey hain to 2.5 lakh ho jaate hain.."
(In gaming, say you bet ₹2,500, and others like you do too - we are five people, sometimes we each put in ₹50k, so it becomes ₹2.5 lakh.)
When asked how they get the details of players:
Reporter- To aapko unki detail kaise pata lagti hai?
(How do you find out their details?)
Tausif - Aisa hai jo game kheltey hain online.. hum unko check karte hain.. kaun jeet raha hai kaun haar raha hai
(We monitor who's winning and who's losing on the game.)
Reporter- Aap check kaise karte ho?
(How do you check?)
Tausif- Hum nahi hum to hack karte hain, jo hamara boss hai na wo detail nikalta hai..
(We hack - our boss extracts the details.)
Reporter- Mohd Imran.. wo kaise nikaltey hain?
(How does Mohd Imran get those details?)
Tausif- Wo sari baaten aapko aise thodi bata denge.
(He won't reveal everything that easily.)
The Role of Jitu: Procuring Accounts for the Gang
Tausif made it clear that Jitu isn't merely a hacker, but also an "account broker" for the gang.
Tausif- Jeetu bhai ... ye madad karte hain hamari.
(Jitu really helps us.)
Reporter- Madad kaisi?
(What kind of help?)
Tausif- Ye hame account la kar detey hain.
(He brings us bank accounts.)
Tausif (continues)- Jaise kisi ka account hai, bank account hai ye detail lakar detey hain.
(He brings the account details of people.)
He further revealed how long they've worked together and how the commission works:
Tausif- Jitu bhai humko bank account lakar detey hain, jitney ye hame bank account lakar detey hain unke hum inko 10 percent detey hain
(Jitu brings us bank accounts ... and we give him 10%.)
Reporter- Matlab paisa uda letey ho aap, aur ye kaam aap kabse kar rahe ho.
(So you take money and do this for how long?)
Tausif- 3 saal se.
(For three years.)
How They Met & Expanded Their Network
Tausif also described how he came into this "business":
Reporter- To aap Imran se kaise mile..?
(So how did you meet Imran?)
Tausif- Actually aapne suna hoga Dharmatala?
(You might have heard of Dharmatala?)
Reporter- Ye kya hai..?
(What is that place?)
Tausif- Ek jagah hai.. Kolkata ka main jagah hai.
(It's a big area in Kolkata.)
Reporter- Dharmatala... kya hai wahan pe?
(What is there in Dharmatala?)
Tausif- Wahan pe market hai sabse badi, uske close aapka Eden Garden hai..
(There's a big market there, close to Eden Gardens.)
Reporter- To Dharmatala mein mile aap Imran se?
(So you met Imran there?)
Tausif- Ji... mein to last mein mila kisi ke through mila.
(Yes, I met him through someone eventually.)
Reporter- Matlab ye sab pehle se... 4 pehle se aur aap 5th aadmi they.
(So there were already 4, and you became the 5th.)
Tausif- Ji.
(Yes.)
Wider Reach: From Kolkata to Uttar Pradesh
The investigation further revealed that their operations are not strictly local to Kolkata. Tausif claimed:
Reporter- Kitne account dilwa diye Jitu bhai ne abhi tak?
(How many accounts has Jitu arranged for you so far?)
Tausif- Abhi to UP se dilwaye hain..
(He has procured some from Uttar Pradesh.)
Reporter- UP se?
(From UP?)
This suggests their network extends beyond Kolkata, potentially making it a pan-regional operation.
The Pitch: How Tehelka Was Offered a Share
In a surprising turn, Tausif made an offer to Tehelka's undercover reporter: partner up.
Reporter- Accha mujhe ye batao hum aur aap milkar kaise kaam kar saktey hai?
(Okay, tell me - how can we work together?)
Tausif- Aap hamko account do gareeb ka.. hum hack karenge... aapke jo account mein jayega aapko bhi 10 percent milega.. jo ki gareeb ke account mein jayega.
(You give us a poor person's account, we hack, and you'll get 10%. It will go into the poor person's account.)
Reporter- Ek din mein kitni kamai ho jayegi..?
(How much can make in one day?)
Tausif- Ho jayegi 1-2 lakh ki.
(About ₹1-2 lakh.)
Reporter- Ek din mein..?
(In one day?)
Frequency of Operations
They also disclosed how often they execute these hacks:
Tausif- Hack karna padta hai is cheez ko, akela thodi na kar raha hai, 5-5 bande lage pade hain.
(It's not one person's job - all five of us are working on it.)
Reporter- Roz karte ho aap?
(Do you do it every day?)
Tausif- Roz ka nahi, ek hafte mein kabhi kabhi 2 baar ho gaya.. 3 baar ho gaya.
(Not daily - sometimes 2 or 3 times a week.)
Reporter- To phir roz aamdani kaise hogi?
(Then how do you make daily income?)
Tausif- Jaise uper se order aata hai MD ki taraf se, usi din hum baith jaate hain.
(When orders come from the top, from the "MD" (Imran), that day we sit to work.)
The Preferential Strategy: Why Poorer Account Holders?
Tausif explained why they avoid rich or high-balance account holders:
Reporter- Accha aapko jo mujhse chahiye wo gareebon ke account chahiye?
(So you want accounts of poor people from me?)
Tausif-Haan.
(Yes.)
Reporter- Ameeron ke nahi chahiye?
(Not rich people's accounts?)
Tausif- Nahi.
(No.)
Reporter- Agar mein kisi ameer ka bhi de du account.. phir ?
(What if I give you a rich person's account?)
Tausif- Actually hame in kaamo ke liye gareebo ke account hi chahiye, ab ek ke account mein to sara paisa daal nahi saktey.. is liye.
(For this work, we only want poor people's accounts - we can't put all the money in just one, that's why.)
The Call Scam: Using SIMs, Laptops & OTPs
Tehelka's probe also explored how the gang conducts calls to extract OTPs, which are often vital to steal funds.
Reporter- To aap kis tareeke se hack kartey ho wo tareeka batao... aap call kaise kartey ho wo to batao.?
(Tell me how you hack - how do you make those calls?)
Tausif- Yehi laptop par kaam ho jata hai.
(We do all this work on laptops.)
Reporter- Kis tareeke se call kartey ho ye to batao.?
(How exactly do you call them?)
Tausif- Hum sab ke alag alag laptop hain aur sari jankari MD Imran nikaltey hain..
(We all have different laptops, and all the data is processed by MD Imran.)
Reporter- Theek hai.. wo aapko de detey hain.. phir...?
(Okay, he gives it to you - then what?)
Tausif- Wo detail nikal kar rakhtey hain.
(He extracts the details and stores them.)
Reporter- Sim ka istemaal kab kartey ho..?
(When do you use the SIM?)
Tausif- Apni sim, apni sim istemaal nahi hoti. Wo to MD Imran lata hai.
(We don't use our own SIMs - Imran brings them.)
Reporter- Us sim se kaise phone kartey ho wo to batao tareeka.?
(How do you call from that SIM? What is the method?)
Tausif- Customer to call kartey hain.. jo hamare bande hain.. ye jo OTP aata hai na.. OTP jo hota hai na usi ke through karte hain hum.
(Our people call the customer ... when OTP comes, we use that OTP to do things.)
Reporter- To aap call kartey ho.?
(So, you make the calls?)
Tausif- Hamare log karte hain.
(Our guys make the calls.)
Reporter- Accha call karne wale alag bande hain.. kitne hain wo.?
(So these callers are different people - how many of them are there?)
Tausif- 2 hi to hain...5 bande hain hamara group.
(There are just 2 callers ... we are a group of 5.)
Tausif (continues) - Hum ek cheez poochtey hain unse OTP ki. Hamare jo bande hotey hain na wo call karke OTP poochtey hain..
(We ask them for the OTP. Our guys call and ask for the OTP.)
Reporter- Kisi aadmi ko phone to kartey ho na, to mein wahi pooch raha hoon kya karte ho aap.?
(You do call people, right? So I am asking - what exactly do you say?)
Tausif- Jaise bank se call aata hai ye ATM card chahiye aap ko.. aap kehtey ho nahi... usi mein jo chahta hai hum ussey OTP maangtey hain, koi koi bata deta hai aur koi koi phone kaat deta hai.
(We pretend to call from the bank, saying "Do you want the ATM card?" In that call, we ask for OTP ... some people give it, some hang up.)
Reporter- To uska aap paisa nahi nikal paatey jo OTP nahin batata hai.. usi ka nikal paatey ho jo batata hai..
(So you can't take money from those who don't give OTP, only from those who do.)
Tausif- Haan.
(Yes.)
Reporter- To aap kya bol kar unko phone kartey ho?
(What do you say when you call them?)
Tausif- Bank se.
(We pretend to be from the bank.)
Reporter- Bank se, sab ko bank se boltey ho..?
(You tell everyone you're calling from the bank?)
Tausif- Jo bande call kartey hain wo boltey hain..
(The people who call, say that.)
Reporter- Matlab OTP milna zaroori hai..?
(So getting OTP is essential?)
Tausif- Haan.
(Yes.)
Reporter- OTP na mile to aap paise nahi nikal paatey.
(If you don't get OTP, you can't withdraw.)
Tausif- Paise to nahi nikal paatey OTP ke bagair. Gaming mein kar letey hain.
(Yes, without OTP we can't take money. But in gaming, we can do it.)
Reporter- Accha gaming mein bina OTP ke ho jaata hai kaam. Usmein OTP ki zaroorat nahi hoti.?
(So in gaming, you don't need OTP?)
Tausif- Haan.
(Yes.)
Total Reach: Number of Accounts Hacked
In a revealing moment, Tausif summarized how much they have already done:
Reporter- Acha ye batao kitne bank account aapne abhi tak hack kar diye aur kitne gaming account.?
(Okay, tell me - how many bank accounts and how many gaming accounts have you hacked so far?)
Tausif- Ab tak maine bataya tha gaming ke 12-13 kar diye. Aur bank ke hamne abhi tak 8-9 kar diye honge.
(We have hacked 12-13 gaming accounts, and about 8-9 bank accounts.)
Personal Background of the Hacker
Tehelka's interview also revealed personal details about Tausif's life.
Reporter- Aap kahan tak padhe ho Tausif..?
(How much have you studied, Tausif?)
Tausif- Mein BA pass hoon.
(I have passed BA.)
Reporter- BA pass ho.. naukri nahi ki kahin.
(You completed BA ... but didn't you take a job?)
Tausif- Naukri mein aisa hai na sir.. naukri mein mann nahi lagta..
(In a job, I didn't have the heart for it.)
Reporter- Rehne wale kahan ke ho aap..?
(Where do you live?)
Tausif- Wahin.. Kolkata..
(There, in Kolkata.)
Reporter- Wahin paida hue wahi padhe... father kya karte hain?
(Born there, studied there ... what did your father do?)
Tausif- Ji father govt job mein they.
(Yes, my father was in a government job.)
Reporter (continues) - Kaunse department mein they father?
(In which department did your father work?)
Tausif- Papa they Hindustan Paper Mill mein, Dharmatala.
(My father worked at Hindustan Paper Mill, Dharmatala.)
What Tehelka's Investigation Reveals
Through this detailed undercover work, Tehelka has illuminated:
A well-organised criminal network: This is not a one-off hacker or lone criminal - a team of five, led by Imran, collaborates in a structured way.
Systemic misuse of poor people's bank accounts: People with little income are being exploited by the gang to serve as conduits for stolen money.
Insider collusion in financial institutions: According to the gang, a bank manager in Kolkata is allegedly helping them access sensitive customer data.
Vulnerabilities in online gaming platforms: By hacking losing accounts, the gang can hide theft under the guise of ordinary game losses.
OTP-based fraud via SIMs and phone calls: They reportedly call customers, impersonating the bank, to extract OTPs.
Geographical reach and scale: The operation is not just local - it involves accounts from other states (e.g., Uttar Pradesh) and appears to be a repeat, weekly business.
Monetary incentives and exploitation: Those whose accounts are used are promised a steady percentage of commissions, creating a perverse relationship between criminals and impoverished account holders.
Through its undercover reporting, Tehelka has peeled back the layers of a cyber-fraud model that relies on the most marginalized, yet supports a well-organised criminal gang. The story highlights systemic vulnerabilities and the sophisticated, often predatory, ways in which cybercriminals operate. This investigation sends a stark warning: as digital platforms grow, so do the networks that exploit them - and the weakest links in the system are often those who can least afford it.
