Taslima Nasrin Accuses West Bengal Government of Censorship Over Lajja Play at Theatre Festivals

Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin has accused the West Bengal government of suppressing artistic expression. She claims her play, "Lajja Shame," adapted from her novel, was cancelled at two theatre festivals in the state. According to Nasrin, police intervened at the Gobardanga Natyoutsav in North 24 Parganas and the Pandua Natyoutsav in Hooghly, urging organisers to remove the play due to fears it might incite communal unrest.

Censorship of Lajja Play in West Bengal

Nasrin expressed her frustration, stating that the play's schedule had been announced two months prior. She remarked, "While the schedule of the play had been announced two months back, all of a sudden the police prevailed upon the organisers to omit Lajja from the list. Let me remind you, a theatre group had staged the same play three times in Delhi before a packed auditorium." Her criticism extended to the Bengal administration for using potential violence as an excuse.

Political Reactions and Allegations

The BJP supported Nasrin's allegations, with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of hypocrisy. Majumdar stated, "The little difference between fundamentalists in Bangladesh and West Bengal Chief Minister has ceased to exist, as she is not allowing a popular stage play of protest against fundamentalism, apprehending it will lead to riots." He further alleged that Banerjee has turned a blind eye to attacks on Hindu places of worship while silencing dissenting intellectuals.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya also criticised Banerjee's handling of law and order in West Bengal. He posted, "If Mamata Banerjee is unable to manage law and order in Bengal and is so intimidated by Muslim veto that even art, culture, and freedom of expression are being stifled, then she should consider stepping down." These remarks highlight the political tensions surrounding this issue.

Organisers' Response and Police Involvement

Organisers of the Gobardanga theatre festival confirmed that "Lajja" was removed from their lineup but did not elaborate on the reasons behind this decision. Meanwhile, state police officials have remained silent on whether they played a role in halting the play. This lack of clarity adds to the controversy surrounding the cancellation.

Nasrin lamented her forced departure from West Bengal due to fears that her presence might provoke fundamentalists into causing riots. She questioned why no action is taken against those who incite violence while writers' voices are suppressed. Her concerns reflect broader issues related to freedom of expression and safety for artists in the region.

The situation underscores ongoing debates about artistic freedom and government intervention in cultural matters. As tensions rise, questions about balancing security concerns with free expression remain central to discussions in West Bengal.
