In response to the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, several universities across Delhi participated in an hour-long shramdaan or voluntary labour on Sunday. The programme was organised as part of celebrating nine years of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
On October 1, several universities in New Delhi participated in an hour-long shramdaan (voluntary labour) as a part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. The event, titled Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath (One Date One Hour Together), was organised to celebrate nine years of the Swachh Bharat Mission. This initiative is aimed at promoting cleanliness and sanitation across India.
Delhi University's Participation

The Delhi University took part in this cleanliness drive by organising activities at two sites - C G Narang Marg and Patel Chest at the North campus. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan graced the occasion with his presence, further underlining the importance of this initiative.
Jamia Millia Islamia's Efforts
In Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), students, teachers, and NCC cadets led by officiating Vice Chancellor Eqbal Hussain actively participated in the drive. The focus areas for cleaning were primarily around central canteen and adjoining areas of the university. JMI Registrar Professor Nazim Hussain Jafri along with other officers from different departments also joined hands for this cause. The varsity’s sanitation department coordinated these efforts seamlessly.
Cleanliness Drive Across IGNOU Regional Centres
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) also joined forces with other institutes to support this cause. Cleanliness drives were organized across various regional centres of IGNOU spread over different states throughout India. The primary objective behind these drives was to promote 'jan bhagidari' or people's participation towards achieving a garbage-free nation.
Nationwide Impact Following PM Modi's Appeal
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal, the cleanliness drive was organized across the country on Sunday. This not only highlighted the importance of cleanliness but also showcased a united front towards achieving a cleaner and healthier India.
In conclusion, this nationwide initiative by various universities in support of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign is indicative of their commitment to societal well-being. By promoting cleanliness and sanitation, these institutions are playing an instrumental role in creating awareness among students and staff about their responsibilities towards maintaining a clean environment. Such initiatives not only foster a sense of responsibility but also instil civic sense among individuals. The active participation from all quarters has indeed made this event successful, thereby taking us one step closer to our goal - a cleaner and healthier India.
