Surya Grahan 2025: Second Solar Eclipse of the Year to Occur on This Date
After witnessing the first solar eclipse of 2025 in March, skywatchers are in for another celestial treat as the second solar eclipse of the year coming soon. Earlier this year, the world also experienced a lunar eclipse, making 2025 a remarkable year for astronomy enthusiasts and casual viewers alike.

What to Expect from the Second Solar Eclipse of 2025?
The solar eclipse on September 21, 2025 will be a partial eclipse, meaning the Moon will cover only a portion of the Sun's surface. According to astronomers, the Moon's central shadow will not touch Earth, so there will be no total eclipse this time.
During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon appears to take a large "bite" out of the Sun as it partially obscures the solar disk.
While most of Australia will witness this partial solar eclipse, India will miss out on this celestial event. The phenomenon will be visible across parts of southern Australia, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and Antarctica. The maximum coverage-about 80%-will be seen over the Southern Ocean midway between New Zealand and a remote part of Antarctica. Meanwhile, the more frequently visited Antarctic Peninsula will experience only about a 12% partial eclipse shortly before sunset.
When Will the Eclipse Begin?
According to NASA, the timings for the partial solar eclipse on September 21, 2025, are:
First location to see the partial eclipse begin: Sept 21, 17:29:43 UTC
Maximum eclipse: Sept 21, 19:41:59 UTC
Last location to see the partial eclipse end: Sept 21, 21:53:45 UTC
What is a Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on our planet. This alignment only happens during the new moon phase, making solar eclipses fascinating and rare events for skywatchers.
In 2025, Earth will witness two solar eclipses, both partial, with the second one taking place this September.
