Suhel Seth Pays Tribute To Ratan Tata: 'Every Indian Was His Family'

Businessman and author Suhel Seth paid heartfelt tributes to former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9 at a Mumbai hospital. Seth praised Tata's extraordinary life, saying it made "every Indian his own family."

"The remarkable thing about Ratan Tata was that, although he had no immediate family, every Indian felt like a part of his family. It's rare for 1.4 billion people to mourn one man. That was Ratan Tata, and that's how he'll always be remembered," Seth wrote in a post on X.

Ratan Tata, who led the Tata conglomerate for over two decades, passed away at 11:30 pm at Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai at the age of 86.

The legendary industrialist is widely credited with transforming Tata Group into India's largest and most influential conglomerate, known for its ambitious global acquisitions.

In a 2017 exclusive interview with Network18, Tata reflected on his views about modern India, the Tata legacy, and its philanthropic mission. He noted that the group's founders, dating back to 1868, had a unique perspective on ownership. Tata explained that when Tata Steel was established, it was meant for the greater good of the country, which at the time was a colonial nation facing deep inequalities.

"JRD Tata often described the Tatas as the trustees of the people. The Tata family could have amassed great wealth, but institutions like Tata Steel were created for the benefit of the nation," Ratan Tata remarked during the interview.

He also highlighted the Tata Trust's contributions, including setting up cancer hospitals, educational institutions, and providing scholarships to gifted individuals. He added that Swami Vivekananda and Sir Jamsetji Tata, the group's founder, had inspired each other.
