Students Detained by Delhi Police During Diwali Celebrations at Jamia Millia Islamia University
Delhi Police detained several students at Jamia Millia Islamia University during Diwali celebrations. This occurred a day after a scuffle between student groups at a similar event. A senior police official mentioned that the university administration had not permitted another Diwali event due to the previous night's incident.

The university filed a complaint against unidentified individuals involved in Tuesday's altercation. Around 30-40 students, including those from JNU and DU, gathered outside the university for a Deep Mahotsav. The police asked them to disperse due to lack of permission.
University Administration's Response
The university administration later issued a statement regarding the incident. They suggested that the disturbance seemed orchestrated, with involvement from outsiders aiming to disrupt the campus's peace. The administration granted conditional permission for Diwali celebrations, which remained peaceful until 7:30 p.m., when slogans were shouted by unknown individuals.
The administration is identifying those responsible through CCTV footage and internal sources. They have filed a formal complaint with Jamia Nagar Police Station against the unidentified persons involved in the matter.
Student Group Reactions
The Association of Minorities at Jamia expressed concern over increasing attacks on minority Hindu students. They urged the university to investigate and take strict action against those responsible. The association highlighted past incidents and demanded a body to address student grievances.
ABVP national media convener Ashutosh Singh stated that educational institutions should allow all festivals to be celebrated. "If an Iftar party can be organized on campus, Diwali celebrations should also be allowed," Singh said. He alleged that radical elements disrupted their event and promised to file a police complaint.
Police Measures and Community Concerns
Police deployed personnel outside Jamia Millia Islamia University as a precaution after tensions arose during Tuesday's Diwali celebrations. Videos showing students chanting communal slogans circulated on social media, prompting increased vigilance around the campus.
A senior officer noted that local police were instructed to enhance security measures. Despite these tensions, ABVP supporters planned another Deep Mahotsav on Wednesday evening, showing their determination to celebrate Diwali.
The Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia did not respond to calls or messages regarding the incident. However, the university administration emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace on campus and addressing any disturbances promptly.
