Students Clash at South Asian University Over Non-Vegetarian Food Served on Maha Shivratri
A conflict reportedly erupted between two student groups at South Asian University (SAU) over the serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Maha Shivratri. The Students Federation of India (SFI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blamed each other for inciting violence. The SAU administration has not yet commented on the incident.

The Delhi Police stated that the university remains peaceful, and no formal complaints have been lodged. An internal investigation is underway by the university. A senior police officer mentioned receiving a PCR call about a quarrel at SAU around 3:45 pm at Maidangarhi Police Station. Upon arrival, officers found an altercation in progress between two groups in the mess.
Allegations and Counterclaims
The SFI Delhi released a statement accusing ABVP members of attacking students in the mess for not adhering to their demand to stop serving non-vegetarian food on Maha Shivratri. They alleged that ABVP members physically assaulted students, including women, and even attacked mess staff. SFI demanded immediate action from the SAU administration against those involved.
In response, ABVP claimed that SFI members forcibly tried to serve non-vegetarian food in a mess meant for fasting students. They argued this act violated religious freedom and disrupted religious harmony. ABVP has called for an impartial inquiry and action against those responsible.
Online Reactions and Videos
Videos allegedly showing the clash in the mess have surfaced online. The Delhi SFI also shared a video on its X handle, asserting that ABVP members attacked women students in the SAU mess. "The ABVP attacks women students in SAU," read their post, condemning ABVP's actions and expressing solidarity with SAU students.
The ABVP described these actions as cowardly and anti-women, while urging for accountability. Meanwhile, both groups continue to stand firm on their respective claims regarding the incident.
As investigations proceed, authorities are urged to ensure a fair examination of events to maintain peace within the university community. The situation remains under observation as stakeholders await further developments.
