Stubble Burning: Punjab Govt Cracks Down On Farmers Who Held Officials Hostage
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed his dismay and anger over an incident where farmers held up government officials who tried to check stubble burning. This event, which the Punjab police have labelled an intolerable act, has spurred heightened efforts to arrest the nine farmers implicated, following the orders of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Speaking to the media, Punjab Police officials emphasised that while the administration had agreed to provide residue management machinery to the farmers, such acts of coercion are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

The incident occurred during an inspection by a three-member team from the Punjab government, tasked with monitoring stubble burning after the paddy crop harvest. The officials attempted to halt the farmers from burning stubble, but they were held hostage and forced to participate in the burning process. This disturbing incident transpired near Bathinda.
The farmers recorded the episode and shared it on social media, inciting widespread outrage. In response, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took to social media to express his strong concerns and displeasure. He identified the farmers involved and subsequently directed the police to register a case.
The case has now been registered against nine individuals, including Baljit Singh and Surjit Singh from the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and Ram Singh.
The practice of burning crop residue has long been common in Punjab due to the vast agricultural lands and the need to manage waste efficiently. However, in recent times, this practice has led to severe air pollution in cities like Delhi, Noida, and even Agra, posing a significant health threat and causing loss of lives.
The Punjab government has been actively campaigning to dissuade farmers from burning crop residue. However, many farmers in the region argue that they resort to this method due to the lack of suitable machinery for alternative disposal.
Multiple incidents have been recorded where farmers protest vigorously against stubble burning, highlighting the severity of the issue.
Stubble burning has emerged as a critical concern due to its contribution to high levels of pollution. The matter has now attracted the attention of the Supreme Court, which has called on neighbouring states, including Delhi, to cease stubble and crop residue burning. The Supreme Court's intervention underscores the urgency of tackling this issue, with the court emphasising that it's a matter requiring immediate resolution, not continued political wrangling.
