Srinagar Police FIRs cite alleged misleading social media posts by Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and Junaid Azim Mattu

Srinagar Police registered two FIRs against National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu over alleged misleading social media content. Police said the posts could create fear, disrupt public order, and fuel unlawful activity. Cases were filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Cyber Police Station, Srinagar.

Srinagar Police booked National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu on Tuesday. Police linked the move to alleged online posts described as misleading. The cases were registered after inputs about content said to spread fear, disrupt public order, and encourage unlawful acts on social media.

Police said the material appeared to push distorted narratives and unverified claims. Srinagar Police warned such posts could trigger unrest and social disharmony. Police also said spreading misinformation threatened peace, security and stability in the area. Both matters were registered at Cyber Police Station, Srinagar, and investigations were opened.

Accordingly, FIR No 02/2026 and FIR No 03/2026 were filed under Sections 1971d and 3531b of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the decision followed "credible inputs\" about false and fabricated content online. The police statement was posted on X by Srinagar Police.

Police urged people to check messages with official and trusted sources before sharing. Police also asked users to avoid forwarding unverified material online. Police said such content could damage communal harmony and disturb public order. The advisory covered both digital platforms and wider social media services.

In posts on X, Mehdi and Mattu claimed their security had been reduced. Mehdi, the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, addressed the issue in strong terms. \"Mehdi, the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, said that he is neither fascinated by these petty things nor scared by the absence of security personnel around him.\"

\"He said that as a citizen of this country, he will exercise his rights to stand up against your atrocities, violation of laws, freedom and democracy given to us by the constitution, to the last drop of my blood.\"

\"Some fools in Jammu and Kashmir Police and administration think that by withdrawing/downgrading my security detail and suspending my Facebook account will stop me from calling out their atrocities. It is laughable!\"

Former Mayor Mattu also linked the alleged change in security to comments on international events. Mattu said the move followed statements about Iran and the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israel air strike. Mattu described the alleged action as immediate and connected it to political criticism.

Srinagar Police said both cases were being investigated at the cyber police station. Police repeated that the focus was on content viewed as false or misleading online. The police advisory asked residents to rely on verified sources and avoid sharing posts that could inflame tensions or disrupt public order.
