Sonam Wangchuk Encourages Public to Join Hunger Strike by Fasting for Ladakh on October 13
Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist, has urged supporters to join a day-long fast on October 13. This is to back their hunger strike at Delhi's Ladakh Bhawan. In an Instagram post, Wangchuk mentioned that many have visited and inquired about supporting Ladakh's cause. He suggested fasting on Sunday as a way to show solidarity.

Wangchuk's hunger strike began on Sunday afternoon and has continued for four days. He noted that numerous individuals, including politicians, have visited them. On Wednesday, a 91-year-old freedom fighter came to express support. The protest aims to highlight the demands of Ladakh's people.
Support from Various Quarters
Wangchuk shared that a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member visited him late at night with mosquito repellent. The visitor expressed support but wished to remain anonymous, avoiding CCTV cameras. "He said he is with the RSS, and close to BJP. He said we have our sympathy with you, and people of Ladakh, but we cannot come out openly," Wangchuk stated.
Additionally, BJP leader Naresh ji delivered a message from Murli Manohar Joshi ji. Wangchuk remarked, "This makes us feel people rise above party, religion, when it is about justice. They are not blind followers, they can differentiate between right and wrong."
Protest Demands and Actions
The group led by Wangchuk is advocating for Ladakh's inclusion in the sixth schedule of the Constitution. This schedule provides for autonomous councils in certain tribal areas with legislative and financial powers. The protesters also seek statehood for Ladakh, a public service commission, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts.
The march to Delhi was organised by the Leh Apex Body alongside the Kargil Democratic Alliance. They were detained at Singhu border on September 30 by Delhi Police but released on October 2. The group continues to demand meetings with top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Health Concerns Amidst Protest
A group member reported that several protesters experienced low blood pressure recently. Despite health concerns, they remain committed to their cause. Wangchuk and his supporters had marched from Leh to Delhi to press their demands.
No central government representative has approached Wangchuk yet, according to a group member. The protest continues as they await engagement from top officials.
The ongoing protest highlights the determination of Ladakh's people to secure their rights and recognition within India's constitutional framework.
