Kerala Activist Zuhara Removes Headscarf In Protest Against Controversial Comment By Samastha Leader

In a bold act of defiance, social activist and writer V P Zuhara publicly removed her headscarf on stage during an event in Kozhikode, Kerala. This was done in protest against a controversial comment allegedly made by Samastha Kerala Jamyathul Ulama leader Mukkam Umar Faizi. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 8th during the inaugural session of the Kudumbashree's 'Thirike Schoolil Back to school' campaign at Nallalam in the city.

Controversial Comment Sparks Outrage

Faizi had recently commented on senior Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) leader K Anil Kumar's statement regarding the traditional headscarf worn by Muslim women in Kerala. The religious leader reportedly suggested that women who did not wear hijab were of questionable character. This comment sparked outrage and became a topic of heated discussion among various sections of society.

Zuhara Defends Women's Right to Choose

Zuhara lashed out at Faizi’s comment during the event, defending a woman's right to choose whether or not she wants to cover her head. "I grew up wearing a headscarf. It is part of my habit and not because I am a Muslim," she told reporters after the incident. In order to underscore her point, she removed the pallu (loose end) of her saree from her head.

Protest Erupts Amidst Audience

As Zuhara raised this issue and removed her headscarf publicly, it led to some unrest amongst certain members present at the event including office-bearers from the parent-teacher association (PTA) of the school from where several audience members hailed. They protested against Zuhara’s act, which led her to leave the venue.

Police Complaint Filed

Zuhara later approached the police and filed a complaint against the PTA office-bearers. She alleged that they hurled abuses at her following her protest against Faizi's comment and her public removal of the headscarf.
