Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Bans Protests and Sloganeering Ahead of Upcoming Session
The Congress party criticised Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Tomar for banning protests and slogan-shouting within the legislature complex. This directive was issued before the session starting on Monday. "Today, under pressure from the government, the Hon'ble Speaker has imposed a ban on legislators protesting or raising the voice of the people within the assembly premises," tweeted Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.

Assembly principal secretary A P Singh explained that a circular with these instructions was released about a week ago. The aim was to maintain decorum and ensure that debates proceed smoothly without disruptions. However, Singhar expressed concerns about this move, stating it limits legislators' ability to address public issues.
Opposition's Concerns Over Restrictions
Singhar highlighted that the opposition has been advocating for live broadcasts of assembly proceedings. He accused the Speaker of succumbing to government pressure by restricting legislators from discussing public matters. "Article 194 of the Constitution grants special powers to legislators, allowing them to raise matters of public interest in the House, express their views, and seek answers from the government," he noted.
According to Singhar, the BJP government often presents misleading data in the assembly. He claimed that they are pressuring the Speaker to implement such restrictions to avoid scrutiny. "This is a murder of democracy. The government is neither allowing assembly proceedings to be broadcast live, nor permitting protests, and now even banning slogan-shouting," he remarked.
Government's Stance on Assembly Proceedings
The directive aims to ensure that assembly sessions are conducted in an orderly manner. However, opposition leaders argue that it stifles their ability to represent public interests effectively. They believe that such measures undermine democratic processes by limiting transparency and accountability.
The controversy over these restrictions highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition in Madhya Pradesh. As both sides prepare for the upcoming session, debates over legislative freedom and transparency continue to unfold.
Efforts to balance decorum with democratic expression remain a contentious issue in state politics. The opposition's demand for live broadcasts reflects their desire for greater transparency in legislative proceedings.
