Sitharaman Refutes Claims of Withholding Funds to Punjab, Criticizes State's Misuse

In a recent statement, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed allegations from the AAP government in Punjab, asserting that the Centre has indeed been allocating funds to the state. Contrary to claims of financial neglect, Sitharaman clarified during her visit to Ludhiana that the issue lies with the Punjab government's utilization of these funds. Her comments were in direct response to accusations from the AAP government, which suggested that the Centre had withheld Rs 9,000 crore meant for Punjab's share.

Sitharaman on Punjabs Funding Issue

While engaging with MSMEs and industrialists in Ludhiana on Tuesday evening, Sitharaman criticized the AAP government for what she described as misleading information being disseminated among the populace. This interaction also served as a platform for her to discuss broader economic issues, including potential changes in income tax post the establishment of a new government.

The Finance Minister expressed optimism about Punjab's economic prospects, despite acknowledging a significant downturn in investment within the state. Citing a study by the MSME promotion council slated for January 2024, she highlighted an 85% decline in investment, attributing this slump to various factors including power shortages, unscheduled power cuts, and concerns over drugs and law enforcement.

Historical data presented by Sitharaman illustrated fluctuations in Punjab's investment landscape. From receiving Rs 43,323 crore in 2018-2019 to a reduced figure of Rs 12,267 crore in 2019-2020, investment saw an uptick during the COVID-19 lockdown with Rs 15,761 crore. However, following the AAP's rise to power in Punjab, investment plummeted to merely Rs 3,000 crore. This stark decrease has sparked debate and controversy between the central government and state authorities.

In contrast, the AAP has vehemently denied these claims. Through a post on X, the party argued that investment in Punjab actually increased from Rs 38,461 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 42,637 crore in 2022-23. This assertion stands in direct opposition to Sitharaman's remarks and underscores ongoing tensions between the state and central governments regarding economic management and transparency.

The discourse surrounding Punjab's financial health and investment climate remains fraught with conflicting narratives. As both sides present differing data and interpretations, stakeholders await further clarity on the state's economic direction under its current leadership.
