‘Sindoor’ Becomes Symbol Of Patriotism As UP's Kushinagar Parents Name 17 Newborns After Indian Military Op
In a remarkable show of patriotism, at least 17 newborns in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district have been named 'Sindoor'-a tribute to the Indian Army's Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
The babies, many of whom were born on May 9 and 10 during the military operation, carry a name now being seen as a symbol of sacrifice and national pride.

Neha Gupta, whose daughter was born on 9 May, said she chose the name to honour the armed forces. "While my heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones, I'm also deeply grateful to our soldiers. Naming my daughter 'Sindoor' is my way of saluting their courage," she told The Times of India.
Traditionally, in many Hindu households in this part of eastern UP, a baby's name is given by the paternal aunt. But the emotional impact of the military's actions has prompted many to break with custom, choosing instead a name that now represents resilience and unity.
The word "sindoor", which usually signifies marital commitment when worn by married women, has taken on broader national role-especially among women who lost their spouses in the Pahalgam attack.
Dr R.K. Shahi, principal of the Government Medical College in Kushinagar, confirmed that 17 babies born at the hospital had been named 'Sindoor'.
"The name has come to embody the spirit of sacrifice and unity following India's strong stand against terror. It's heartening to see how the public has responded with such depth of feeling," he said.
Local activist Rajesh Mani called the trend a reflection of collective sentiment.
"In this region, many families have members serving in the military. That connection may explain the surge in nationalistic feeling. Regardless, it's inspiring to think that these children may one day grow up to serve the country themselves."
In Bhedihari village, Archana Shahi had already decided on the name long before her daughter was born.
"To me, 'Sindoor' now symbolises bravery and strength. It felt only right to name her after such a defining moment," she said.
Her husband, Ajit, echoed her thoughts: "This is our small gesture to honour the soldiers who defend us. We owe them our peace and safety."
Other families, including those of Vyasmuni from Bhathahi Babu, Priyanka Devi and Madan Gupta from Padrauna, have also embraced the name. While the babies now share a name, what truly connects these families is a deep-rooted sense of national pride and gratitude.
