Devastating Flash Flood in Sikkim Claims More Lives, Search for Missing Continues

The toll from the flash flood in Sikkim has increased to 18 with ongoing rescue operations by Army and NDRF teams. Ninety-eight people, including tourists and army personnel, are still unaccounted for after a cloudburst triggered the disaster. The calamity has also affected over 22,000 people across the region.

The recent flash flood in Sikkim has taken a devastating toll, with the death count rising to 18 on Thursday. The incident occurred due to a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim, which triggered the catastrophic event. Rescue operations are being carried out by Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams who are battling through slushy earth and fast-flowing water in the Teesta river basin as well as downstream north Bengal. Their mission is focused on finding those who were swept away by the floods and remain missing.

As per official reports, around 98 people including 22 army personnel continue to be unaccounted for following the disaster. Chief Secretary V B Pathak confirmed this grim statistic while also revealing that four of the deceased had been identified as ‘jawans’. It’s clear that these natural disasters have far-reaching consequences affecting not only civilians but also our armed forces.

Injured and Displaced Individuals

Apart from those lost or missing, there are numerous individuals grappling with injuries sustained during this calamity. Around twenty-six people have suffered injuries of varying severity and are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals across Sikkim. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) revealed that up until now, 2,011 people have been rescued from perilous conditions.

Tourists Stranded

In addition to locals affected by this tragedy, an estimated number of over 3,000 tourists find themselves stranded in different parts of Sikkim due to disrupted transportation links caused by these lethal floods. This group includes foreign nationals as well as Indian tourists visiting this scenic state nestled in the Himalayas.

Efforts Towards Normalcy

Despite these dire circumstances, efforts are being made to bring about a semblance of normalcy. Chief Secretary V B Pathak stated that the Army’s 27th Mountain Division had informed him that tourists stuck in areas such as Lachen, Lachung and other adjoining regions in North Sikkim were safe. The calamity has affected more than 22,034 people according to SSDMA, which is working relentlessly towards rescue and relief operations.
