Siddaramaiah Unveils Painting of Anubhava Mantapa, Celebrating Basavanna's Vision for Inclusivity

Anubhava Mantapa, akin to modern legislative bodies, was inclusive, involving all castes and women, stated Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He unveiled a painting of Anubhava Mantapa at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on Monday. Allama Prabhu, from an oppressed community, led the Mantapa as its president. Siddaramaiah expressed his honour in unveiling the painting, highlighting its historical significance.

Basavanna founded Anubhava Mantapa in the 12th century CE in present-day Bidar district. His movement aimed to eradicate inequality and caste discrimination. Siddaramaiah noted that Basavanna and his followers envisioned a society free from exploitation and caste barriers, striving for equality among all individuals.

Basavanna's Teachings and Vision

The Chief Minister emphasised Basavanna's teachings on compassion as the core of religion. Basavanna communicated these ideas in a simple manner for everyone to understand. Siddaramaiah compared the caste system to dirt at the bottom of a well, which resurfaces when disturbed. He stressed Basavanna's vision of a society without such barriers, even 850 years ago.

Siddaramaiah mentioned leaders like R Ashoka, Ashwath Narayan, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal from BJP, and G Parameshwara, H K Patil, K H Muniyappa, and himself as Shudras. Historically, people like them faced discrimination due to caste. Education was denied to Shudras and women until Basavanna's movement advocated for inclusivity.

Historical Context and Social Change

The CM pointed out that those benefiting from caste inequalities perpetuate discrimination. He quoted Kuvempu's belief in equality at birth and Kanakadasa's call against caste division. These resonate with Basavanna’s teachings. Siddaramaiah reiterated that true progress requires economic and social mobility.

He also highlighted that inclusive forums existed even during Buddha’s era. Such platforms enabled discussions on social issues and promoted unity among diverse communities. Siddaramaiah concluded by emphasising the importance of these teachings in fostering an equitable society.
