The victim, a 28-year-old second-year student in the respiratory medicine department at RG Kar Medical College, was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the hospital. The autopsy report revealed that she was sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered, as reported by ANI.

The report detailed severe injuries, including bleeding from her eyes and mouth, and injuries to multiple parts of her body, including her face, neck, and private areas. The accused was reportedly seen entering the hospital at around 4 am on Friday wearing earphones, which were not found on him when he exited the premises, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The individual had been employed as a civic volunteer, granting him easy access to the hospital facilities. Protests and demonstrations have erupted in Kolkata in response to the horrific crime. Doctors and students from various state-run hospitals, including RG Kar Medical College, have participated in massive protests and sit-ins.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a strong statement, demanding immediate action and warning of nationwide protests if their demands are not met within 48 hours. The IMA condemned the crime as a reflection of the prevailing insecurity on campus, as per media reports.

CPI(M) workers have also held rallies in Kolkata, demanding justice and calling for a judicial inquiry into the matter. The party criticized the handling of the case and accused local authorities of suppressing the incident. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused and has expressed her commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation.
