Shiv Sena Triumphs in 7 Lok Sabha Seats Post-Party Split, Faces Setback in Mumbai
In a significant political development in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena, under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, secured victory in seven out of the 15 Lok Sabha seats it contested. This outcome is particularly noteworthy in Thane, Shinde's political stronghold. However, the party faced setbacks in Mumbai, losing two constituencies to its rival faction, Shiv Sena UBT, led by Uddhav Thackeray. This electoral battle comes ahead of the pivotal assembly polls later this year, which are anticipated to determine the dominant faction of Shiv Sena following the party's split in 2022.

The electoral contest between the two factions of Shiv Sena was most pronounced in 13 constituencies, with Shinde's faction winning six of these direct confrontations. Despite these victories, the party's performance in Mumbai highlighted its challenges, losing Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central to Shiv Sena UBT. Nonetheless, it managed to retain Mumbai North West by a narrow margin of 48 votes. This election was a litmus test for both factions post the division that saw the original Shiv Sena split into two entities.
Comparatively, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the undivided Shiv Sena had contested 23 seats in alliance with the BJP and secured 18 victories. The split within the party led to a reduced number of contested seats this time around, with strategic adjustments including not repeating candidates in certain constituencies and last-minute candidate declarations due to coordination issues with allies BJP and the NCP of Ajit Pawar.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed some of the electoral losses to what he described as relentless opposition propaganda and vote-bank politics. He specifically mentioned challenges such as delays in candidate announcements that contributed to setbacks in certain constituencies. For instance, in Nashik, despite opposition from both BJP and NCP, Shiv Sena fielded Hemant Godse, who was defeated by Shiv Sena UBT candidate Parag Waje.
This election cycle has not only tested the resilience and appeal of both Shiv Sena factions but also set the stage for the upcoming assembly polls. These results reflect the shifting political dynamics within Maharashtra and underscore the internal challenges faced by parties undergoing transitions. As both factions prepare for the assembly elections later this year, their strategies and public reception will be crucial in determining their respective standings as the legitimate bearers of the Shiv Sena legacy.
