Shiv Sena Gears Up for BMC Polls with Strategic Meeting of MLAs and MPs Led by Eknath Shinde

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, convened a meeting with Shiv Sena officials, MLAs, and MPs. This gathering was part of the party's strategy for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, anticipated next year. Newly-elected Shiv Sena MLAs shared their ideas on fortifying the party, which is the second-largest in the ruling Mahayuti coalition.

Strengthening Party Presence

During the meeting, legislators emphasised the importance of grassroots efforts. They suggested focusing on booth-level activities to strengthen the organisation in Mumbai. A membership drive in every civic ward was also highlighted as crucial. The party aims to build on its success from the November assembly elections, where it secured 57 seats.

Strategising for BMC Elections

Discussions also revolved around strategies for the BMC elections. The BMC is India's wealthiest civic body, with a budget of nearly Rs 60,000 crore for 2024-25. Shiv Sena leaders believe that maintaining momentum from recent assembly polls is vital for success in these elections.

The Shiv Sena achieved victory in six assembly seats in Mumbai's suburbs. However, its main competitor, Shiv Sena UBT, won ten constituencies. Historically, the undivided Shiv Sena controlled the BMC for 25 years, from 1997 to 2022.

The term of previous BMC representatives concluded in early March 2022. New elections have been pending for almost three years. As preparations continue, the party remains focused on regaining its influence within Mumbai's civic administration.
