Eknath Shinde Demands Treason Charges Against MLA Abu Azmi for Praising Aurangzeb
Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has called for treason charges against Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi. This demand follows Azmi's praise of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who tortured Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Shinde described Azmi's comments as unacceptable and urged an apology, stating that such remarks insult national icons like Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj.

Azmi, the Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra president, highlighted Aurangzeb's reign by noting India's borders extended to Afghanistan and Myanmar. He claimed that during this period, India's GDP was 24% of the world's total, earning it the title of a "golden sparrow." Azmi also referred to the conflict between Aurangzeb and Sambhaji Maharaj as a political struggle.
Historical Context and Reactions
Shinde criticised Azmi's statements, emphasising the brutal torture endured by Sambhaji Maharaj at Aurangzeb's hands. The Maratha king suffered severe torture for 40 days, including having his eyes gouged out and fingers ripped off. Shinde argued that praising such a figure is a significant crime and demanded accountability from Azmi.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that Azmi's comments are an affront to patriots and national heroes. He insisted that Azmi should face legal action for treason due to his remarks. Shinde also mentioned that the Chief Minister has taken these comments seriously, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
Film Depiction and Cultural Impact
A recent Hindi film titled "Chhaava" has portrayed the courage and sacrifice of Sambhaji Maharaj. This cinematic work aims to highlight the historical significance of Sambhaji Maharaj's resistance against Mughal rule. The film serves as a reminder of his bravery and enduring legacy in Indian history.
Shinde reiterated that any glorification of Aurangzeb undermines the sacrifices made by figures like Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj. He called for respect towards these historical icons who played pivotal roles in shaping India's past. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions around historical narratives in India.
The debate over Aurangzeb's legacy continues to evoke strong emotions in Maharashtra. Many view him as a tyrant who oppressed local rulers, while others focus on his administrative achievements. This incident highlights the complex interplay between history, politics, and cultural identity in contemporary India.
