Northeast India Tourism Conclave Kicks Off in Shillong
The 11th edition of the International Tourism Mart (ITM) kicked off in Shillong, Meghalaya, India, with a focus on the regions tourism potential and rich biodiversity. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized the unprecedented economic growth in the Northeast and the support from the Indian government.
In Meghalaya's scenic capital, Shillong, a three-day mega tourism conclave commenced on Tuesday. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, and Union Tourism Secretary V Vidyavathi. The renowned Shillong Chamber Choir performed a mesmerizing tribute in the Khasi language for Meghalaya during the event.
Promoting Northeast India's Tourism Potential

The mega event aims to showcase the immense tourism potential of India's northeastern region, highlighting its rich biodiversity and emphasizing the government's Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged the unprecedented economic growth in the Northeast, crediting the support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India, and various ministries.
Economic Development and Job Creation
Sangma emphasized the government's focus on ensuring that the Northeastern states progress along with the rest of the country, leading to inclusive economic development. He highlighted the significance of infrastructure development, youth-oriented programs, agriculture, and sectors like tourism in creating job opportunities for the region's youth.
Meghalaya's Unique Tourism Offerings
The Chief Minister highlighted Meghalaya's unique tourism offerings, such as its caves and rich elephant population. He proposed the idea of developing an elephant corridor that could serve as a tourist destination while promoting peaceful coexistence between humans and elephants.
PRASHAD Scheme for Religious Tourism Sites
During the ITM launch event, the Ministry of Tourism announced the sanctioning of Rs 29.32 crore for the development of four key iconic religious tourism sites in Meghalaya under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme. These sites include Nartiang Shakti Peeth, Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church, Aitnar Pool, and Charantala Kali Temple.
Sustainability and Mission LiFE
Union Minister of State for Tourism, Shripad Naik, emphasized the ministry's commitment to sustainable development in the Northeast region. The ITM event adopted low-carbon options, aligning with the action points formulated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change for the implementation of Mission LiFE.
