New Delhi, Dec 8: The Supreme Court was quite open in its criticism for the Bihar government when it chided the latter for being indifferent to the mental and the physical pain of an acid attack victim in Bihar.

Drawing the 2012 incident, the court censured the government saying that the victim had 90% acid burns and yet it was given a compensation of just 2.42 lakhs while the family had already spent 5 lakhs on her treatment.

Justices M.Y. Eqbal and C. Nagappan also criticised the Centre for allowing the easy availability of acids, which have destroyed many innocent lives. The SC also directed the Centre to include the names of acid attack victims Social Justice Ministry's disability list so that they are not deprived from the government welfare schemes.

Taking note of the condition of Chanchal, the SC said,"the very sight of the victim is traumatising for us," said: "If we could be traumatised by the mere sight of injuries caused to the victim by the inhumane acid attack on her, what would be the situation of the victim ... Perhaps, we cannot judge."

In October 2012, four assailants sneaked into Chanchal's roof where she and her sister were sleeping. They thre acid on her, some of which also fell on her sister and waited to enjoy when both girls were writhing in pain.

The SC judgement was regarding the family's complaint of delayed medical attention when the family took the girls to the hospital on the night of the incident. They complained that the doctor arrived only next morning. Meanwhile, the SC instructed the Bihar government to pay a total compensation of Rs 13 lakh to the two sisters.
