"I had met Congress Vice president Rahul Gandhi last week on Wednesday and discussed to be relieved from all responsibilities," he said in a statement, hinting at retirement from active politics.

Kamat said he had requested Gandhi to relieve him from all responsibilities on February 3, the day Congress candidates were announced for the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections, and repeated his plea on February 21, the day of BMC polling.

"I thank Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for the opportunity given to me to serve the party," he said without elaborating on the reasons for his decision.

Kamat is a veteran politician who has represented Mumbai North East constituency of Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha five times. However, in 2014 he lost the Lok Sabha Election.
