Security is a big cause for concern in Aadhaar system, says Ex UIDAI head Nandan Nilekani

Infosys co-founder and former chairman of Unique Identity Development Authority of India Nandan Nilekani on Tuesday said that the Aadhaar system has not been breached but security will be a cause for concern.

While speaking at an event CK Prahalad Memorial Lecture organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Nilekani said that Aadhaar has not been hacked, but people have tried to get users to do OTPs (one-time passwords) and game others' details and capture them. It's not a hack but security is the big concern here.

His comments came at the backdrop of UIDAI lodging a complaint with the Bengaluru police last month against Ola employee and co-founder of Qarth Technologies, Abhinav Srivastava on charges of Aadhaar data theft.

According to the complaint, Srivastava illegally accessed UIDAI data through an "Aadhaar e-KYC verification" mobile app that he developed himself.

Nilekani also said that if we are living in this digital world, we also have to make sure about the security and system to be secured. All over the world, it's a challenge, but we are moving at a rapid pace," he said, suggesting UIDAI was using the best security systems and protocols.

Nilekani further said that its the policy issue which is need to be addressed soon not the technology issue.
