It took place in the Lam area of Nowshera on the intervening night of September 8-9, 2024.

The Indian Army's White Knight Corps announced the success of the mission on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "OP KANCHI. Based on inputs from intelligence agencies and @JmuKmrPolice regarding a likely infiltration bid, an anti-infiltration operation was launched by #IndianArmy on the intervening night of 08-09 Sep 24 in general area Lam, #Nowshera."

The update confirmed the elimination of two terrorists and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, including two AK-47 rifles and one pistol.

The White Knight Corps added, "Two terrorists have been neutralised and a large quantity of war-like stores including Two AK-47s and one Pistol thus far recovered. Search operation is in progress."

This development occurs just days before the assembly elections are set to take place in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first such exercise since December 2014.

It also follows significant political changes in the region, including the abrogation of Article 370 from the Indian Constitution and the bifurcation of the former state into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The elections will be conducted in three phases: the first on September 18, the second on September 25, and the final phase on October 1.

The results will be counted on October 8, which aligns with the revised dates for Haryana's elections.

Initially, the counting in Jammu and Kashmir was scheduled for October 4, but it was shifted following the changes in Haryana's schedule, where polling was moved to October 5 and counting to October 8.

Key political players in Jammu and Kashmir include the National Conference and Congress, which are contesting the elections as an alliance, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been India's ruling party since May 2014.
