Section 144 Imposed In Odisha's Bhadrak As Communal Tensions Flare
In the wake of a violent confrontation triggered by a contentious social media post in Bhadrak, Odisha, the local administration enforced Section 144 on Friday evening, banning large gatherings and imposing several restrictions under the jurisdiction of the Puranabazar police station. This measure was taken to quell the unrest that erupted between two communities, leading to a clash that saw at least two members of the police force injured due to stone pelting. The prohibitory orders, hence, aim to restore peace and prevent further escalation of violence.

The clash began after a youth from one community made a provocative post on social media, inciting members of another community to organize a protest rally. The situation quickly deteriorated when the protesters began throwing bricks at each other, as per official reports. The intervention of a police team, which was met with hostility for objecting to the unauthorized rally, marked a significant turn in the events, resulting in injuries to law enforcement officers, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Bhadrak and a Sub-Inspector (SI) from Bhadrak Town Police Station.
Details of Prohibitory Orders Under Section 144
Under the prohibitory orders of Section 144, several strict guidelines have been put into place to ensure public safety and maintain order. These include a complete ban on the gathering of people in public areas, holding any form of processions, rallies, or public meetings. Additionally, there are specific restrictions on the movement of individuals in areas identified as hotspots for potential unrest. The carrying of weapons or any explosive materials within these zones has also been expressly forbidden to mitigate the risk of violence.
As tensions escalated, the police were compelled to use mild lathicharge as a means to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. The decision to invoke Section 144 came after careful consideration of the volatile circumstances, with the primary objective being the immediate restoration of harmony and the prevention of any further disturbances.
In response to the injuries sustained by police personnel during the unrest, the administration announced the implementation of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. This legal provision, promulgated for an indefinite period, underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and maintaining public order amidst challenging situations.
