In Shimla, the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) has witnessed a significant influx of patients exhibiting symptoms of this infectious disease. Official reports confirm a total of 295 cases within the district.

What is Scrub Typhus, the Lethal Infection?

Scrub typhus is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium known as Orientia tsutsugamushi. The infection is transmitted to humans through the bites of mites, typically found in grass, bushes, and on animals such as rats, rabbits, mice, and squirrels.

Symptoms of the infection encompass high fever, chills, severe headache, dry cough, body aches, muscle pain, the formation of scab-like wounds at the chigger bite site, swollen lymph nodes, red spots or rashes on the body, red eyes, confusion, coma, gastrointestinal issues, enlargement of the liver and spleen, and meningitis.

Medical experts note that symptoms typically manifest around ten days after infection. Left untreated, the disease can lead to multiple organ failure, a life-threatening complication.

Individuals engaged in gardening and outdoor activities are at elevated risk of contracting this infection. Preventative measures include focusing on rodent control, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, handling pets with caution, applying mite repellents to exposed skin, and regularly cleaning the surroundings, including the removal of shrubs and low vegetation.
