School Holidays In December: Winter Break And Christmas Celebrations

Students across India are back in school in December after a long break during the festive season, which included celebrations for Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath. With the last month of the year beginning, the northern states are experiencing mild cold, central India continues to face bad air quality, and the southern regions are seeing rainfall.

Schools had closed during the last week of November, with many institutions shifting to online classes due to heavy rain and high air pollution levels. However, December is expected to bring further closures as schools across the country prepare for winter vacations. Students will also have a holiday for Christmas, which is one of the few major occasions in December.

There are four Saturdays and five Sundays in December 2024, providing additional breaks for students. By December 25, most schools in northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand are expected to announce winter vacations, as per the Times Now report. The timing and duration of these vacations typically depend on local weather conditions and are decided by district administrations and school authorities.

In many regions, winter vacations start around December 21 or 25, while in others, they may occur in early January, lasting until mid-January.

Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, schools have been closed since early December due to Cyclone Fengal. A Red Alert has been issued in eight districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram. The Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for schools in these districts on Saturday as a precautionary measure.

In Delhi, where air pollution remains a concern, schools have reopened, but students have been advised to wear masks and minimise outdoor activities to avoid health risks from poor air quality.

The varied weather conditions and associated challenges highlight the unique regional differences across India as students resume their studies.
