School Holidays: Due to intense rainfall in Kerala, Kannur district has decided to shut all educational institutions, including anganwadis, professional colleges, and tuition centres. This closure is scheduled for June 14 and 15 following a heavy rain warning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the state will experience rainfall over the next five days due to westerly winds and a cyclonic circulation over northern Karnataka.

The IMD has issued alerts across various parts of Kerala. On June 14, an orange alert was announced for ten districts, while four districts received a yellow alert. For Saturday, two districts are under a red alert, nine have an orange alert, and two are on yellow alert. These warnings highlight the potential for severe weather conditions.

Weather Alerts and Warnings

The IMD has advised against fishing along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast from Friday until June 17 due to anticipated strong winds and adverse weather conditions. A red alert signifies extremely heavy rain exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert indicates very heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert suggests heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm.

Kerala's monsoon arrived early on May 24, causing significant damage to both public and private properties. Roads and low-lying areas were flooded, trees were uprooted, and electricity poles were knocked down due to the heavy rains and strong winds. The continuous monsoon rains battered various parts of the state until around May 31 before easing off.

The IMD forecasts that the rains will intensify in the coming days. The persistent downpour has already led to widespread disruption across the state. As residents brace for more rain, authorities are urging caution and preparedness to mitigate further damage.
