SC Student Enrollment Sees Significant Rise Over Eight Years, NCBC Finds
In a significant development reported by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), there has been a notable increase in student enrollment across various categories in India. The data, reflecting the period from 2014-15 to 2021-22, showcases a substantial rise in the number of students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST), with a particular emphasis on female student enrollment.

The NCBC's recent announcement highlighted a 44 per cent increase in SC student enrollment, escalating from 4.61 million in the academic year 2014-15 to an impressive 6.62 million by 2021-22. This growth is mirrored in the enrollment of female SC students, which saw a remarkable 51 per cent increase.
Advancements in Minority and OBC Student Enrollment
Minority female student enrollment also experienced a significant uptick, with a 42.3 per cent rise recorded, moving from 1.07 million to 1.52 million during the same period. The enrollment of ST students was not left behind, witnessing a 65.2 per cent increase from 1.641 million to 2.71 million, with female ST enrollment jumping by an astounding 80 per cent.
OBC student enrollment saw substantial growth across various educational institutions. Notably, during the academic year 2020-21, a 27 per cent reservation for OBC students was implemented in Central Schools, Navodaya Schools, and Sainik Schools, leading to thousands of new admissions.
Enhancements in Medical Education Admissions
The impact of these policies extends into higher education and professional courses as well. MBBS admissions for OBC students rose steadily from 1,662 in 2021 to 2,090 in 2023. Similarly, admissions for PG Medical courses for OBC students increased from 2,663 in 2021 to 3,322 in 2023.
Overall Increase in Higher Education Enrollment
The NCBC data further revealed that overall enrollment in higher education witnessed a significant rise from 34.2 million in 2014-15 to 43.3 million in 2021-22, marking a 26.5 per cent increase. Female enrollment saw an even greater boost of 32 per cent during this period.
OBC student enrollment in central universities grew by 32.6 per cent from 2014-15 to 2020-21, with female OBC enrollment increasing by over 40 per cent. Institutes of National Importance recorded a remarkable growth of 71 per cent in OBC enrollment, with female OBC enrollment more than doubling.
NCBC Chairman Hansraj Gangaram Ahir emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding and enhancing the constitutional rights of OBCs and other minority groups through these initiatives.
This comprehensive increase across various categories underscores the effectiveness of policies aimed at promoting inclusivity and diversity within India's educational landscape. The data not only reflects the government's ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to education for all but also highlights the significant strides made towards achieving this goal over the past seven years.
