Satnami Community Protest in Chhattisgarh Leads to Violence and Damage

Violence erupted in Balodabazar city, Chhattisgarh, following a protest by the Satnami community against the desecration of a religious symbol, leading to the imposition of prohibitory orders. The demonstration, initially called for a peaceful gathering, turned violent on Monday, with several vehicles and a government building set ablaze. The unrest was sparked by the vandalism of a jaitkhamb, a revered structure for the Satnami community, prompting a widespread outcry and demands for a thorough investigation.

Violence at Satnami Protest

Authorities responded to the escalating situation by deploying police forces and imposing Section 144 of the CrPC in Balodabazar city, effectively banning assemblies of four or more people and halting all rallies and processions. The decision came after numerous police officers sustained injuries from stone-pelting protesters during the demonstration. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has been briefed on the incident and has called for strict action against those disrupting social harmony.

The incident that led to the protest involved the vandalization of a jaitkhamb near Amar Gufa in Giroudpuri dham on the night of May 15-16. Despite the arrest of three individuals linked to the act, the Satnami community has pushed for an investigation by a central agency. In response to the desecration, community members organized a protest at Dussehra Maidan and planned to surround the collector's office on Monday.

According to Balodabazar Superintendent of Police Sadanand Kumar, approximately 5,000 protesters breached police barricades, resulting in several injuries among law enforcement officers. The demonstrators set fire to vehicles and buildings within the collectorate premises, including the office of the Superintendent of Police. Efforts are underway to assess the extent of damage caused by the violence.

In light of these events, Balodabazar-Bhatapara Collector KL Chouhan issued an order extending the imposition of Section 144 until midnight of June 16. The order aims to prevent further unrest and maintain peace in the municipality by restricting large gatherings and prohibiting weapons in public spaces.

The state government has initiated a judicial probe into the vandalism incident at the behest of various organizations and representatives from the Satnami community. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, who also oversees the Home portfolio, emphasized that disturbances to social harmony would not be tolerated and assured that stringent measures would be taken against those found guilty.

The Satnami community, which constitutes a significant portion of Scheduled Castes in Chhattisgarh, was founded by medieval era social reformer Baba Ghasidas. The recent events have highlighted ongoing tensions and underscored the importance of addressing grievances to maintain communal harmony.
