Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off the Run for Unity on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, which is the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Earlier the PM paid floral tributes to Patel. The others who paid tributes were President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President, Venkaiah Naidu and Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh.

In a video posted on Twitter, the PM said, 'We salute Sardar Patel on his Jayanti. His momentous service and monumental contribution to India can never be forgotten.' PM Modi also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary.

Modi said in his address that the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel also is the death anniversary of former prime minister, Indira Gandhi. The PM said that he is proud of the contributions made by Patel. His contributions before and after independence has made us all proud, Modi further stated.

While flagging off the Run for Unity, Modi said that he is really happy that the young generation is taking part in this event. He said that India is a country that is full of diversity. Unity in diversity is our speciality, he also said.

Modi said that many people tried to ensure that Patel's contributions were forgotten. His legacy was ignored by many governments, Modi also added.

However the youth of this nation respects him for his contribution towards building the nation.
